The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

The research conducted in the Diabetes Research Group within the Wells Center for Pediatric Research is focused on type 1 diabetes immunology, tolerance, and autoimmunity using relevant in vitro and ex vivo models of mouse and human type 1 diabetes. This includes, but is not limited to, small animal surgery, immunohistochemical staining, tissue and cell culture, qPCR, and flow cytometry assays. This research makes extensive use of cell and molecular biology techniques and includes small animal (mouse) handling and dosing.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) in conducting research in Diabetes Research Group within the Wells Center for Pediatric Research
• Maintains mouse colonies
  • Sets up and maintains breeder cages
  • Maintains non-breeding cages
  • Handles animals, such as weaning, ear notching, tail snips, dosing, genotyping, and maintaining colony records
• Performs cell and molecular biological techniques, including, but not limited to: In vivo and in vitro assays, tissue fixation, molecular markers, immuno-histo-chemistry, RNA and protein extraction and measurements from islets and other tissue, and tissue culture
• Manages general laboratory duties
  • Orders lab supplies
  • Maintains inventory and reagents
  • Assists with the maintenance of regulatory monitoring and paperwork (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), Biosafety, Laboratory Safety, and Radiation Safety)
  • Sets up and maintains laboratory equipment
  • Schedules laboratory meetings and presentations as needed

General Responsibilities

• Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results
• Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments
• Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed
• Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training
• Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management
• May train junior-level staff
• May help plan experiments or short-term goals

Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

• Bachelor's degree in science or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$38,000 - $43,000 per year based on a combination of experience, skill level, education, and training
