Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Performs skilled and supervisory work planning, implementing, and maintaining a secure lock system for a large facility with responsibility for security of students, patients, inmates, drugs or toxic materials, computer and telecommunication systems, research materials, and safekeeping of valuable materials or objects. The work entails knowledge of varied and unique lock systems and the ability to perform skilled work in complex locking systems and to train others in repair and maintenance of such systems.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Makes repairs to electronic locking systems and replaces keys as necessary through the maintenance work order system or as requested by staff. Observes, troubleshoots, and tests all locking devices and keys within the secure perimeter of the complex, i.e., living units, sleeping rooms, hallways, sliders, exteriors, sally ports, vehicle gate locks, and other areas of the complex. Ensure that locks and keys are in proper working order. Communicate effectively with the security electronics equipment technician and vendor frequently to assure the status of the computer PLC’s and Central Control computer touch screens are normal. Reports back daily to supervisor advising supervisor on work order statuses. Responsible for prioritizing each work order.

Performs preventive maintenance by adjusting and lubricating locking systems on a regular basis to assure that locking devices are maintained in proper working order especially to the exterior egress doors. Repairs or replaces worn or broken parts on slider door locking systems, fabricating, replacing parts as necessary, and replacing electric motors, gear boxes, timing chains, and indicator bars in order to ensure continued security and safety of the complex is maintained. Performs special project assignments such as comprehensive rekeying program, which may include Great Grand Master, Sub-Master, Department Master, Floor Master and individual keying. Maintains a current inventory of locking device parts critical to daily operation (Key blanks, casting, cables, etc.) to ensure prompt repair or replacement. Creates, maintains, and keep’s inventory records of keys throughout the Complex. Performs annual inventory of all keys issued to all staff, key watcher system, living units, and lock shop keys. Conducts inventory of materials by visually checking supplies and determining daily needs to ensure that ample supplies are kept on hand to adequately repair and maintain the various locking systems in a timely manner throughout the complex.

Responsible for supervising and training a Juvenile Offenders work crew consisting of 2-4 Juvenile Offenders in the proper troubleshooting, installation, assembling, maintaining and repairs to the KJCC complex’s general maintenance systems throughout the building. All work will be related to any related machines and equipment associated with these systems throughout the KJCC complex’s infrastructure. This is vital position of the KJCC complex infrastructure to sustain comfort and life safety standards for the Juvenile Offender’s and staff at Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex.

Obtains training consistent with existing hourly standards to maintain and update professional skills as a condition of employment. Inventories all tools and equipment by visual inspection and physical count of each tool or piece of equipment at the end of each shift or job to assure that tools and equipment are accounted for and in good repair.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma / GED

Licensing & Certification: Driver's License

Minimum Qualifications: Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must be 21 years of age or older. Must take and pass a drug screening test provided by the Office of Personnel Services. A TB skin test and a background investigation.
