The 200,000-square-foot, three-story facility will offer a range of essential healthcare services including an Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging Services, 38 Medical/Surgical beds, 12 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and 4 Operating Rooms. Situated on a 27-acre medical campus in Smithfield, this brand-new, 200,000‑square‑foot, three‑story hospital was designed from the ground up to deliver modern, efficient, and patient‑centered emergency care from day one.

The facility includes a full-service Emergency Department, diagnostic imaging, 38 Medical/Surgical beds, 12 ICU beds, and 4 operating rooms—ensuring a seamless continuum of care for patients when they need it most.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic Emergency Department nursing leader who thrives in fast-paced environments, leads calmly under pressure, and is passionate about delivering exceptional emergency care.

In this role, you will provide clinical and operational leadership for the Emergency Department, ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality care while developing and supporting a high-performing ED team. As a clinical expert, you will validate competency, champion evidence-based emergency practice, and collaborate closely with emergency physicians and interdisciplinary partners.

What You’ll Do

Lead Emergency Care Excellence

  • Oversee the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient-centered emergency services
  • Ensure compliance with emergency nursing standards, patient safety initiatives, and regulatory requirements
  • Identify and mitigate clinical risks unique to the Emergency Department environment

Drive Throughput, Flow & Readiness

  • Support effective triage, patient flow, and surge response
  • Collaborate with inpatient units, ICU, imaging, and perioperative services to optimize transitions of care
  • Sustain readiness for high-acuity, high-volume, and emergent situations

Build & Lead High-Performing ED Teams

  • Recruit, onboard, train, and mentor Emergency Department staff
  • Promote retention, engagement, and professional growth in a demanding clinical environment
  • Complete timely evaluations and manage performance concerns in partnership with HR

Partner with Emergency Physicians

  • Build strong, credible relationships with ED physicians and advanced practice providers
  • Collaborate on protocols, order sets, evidence-based practice, and process improvement
  • Address physician concerns promptly and follow through with action

Manage Resources Strategically

  • Participate in ED budgeting, staffing models, productivity monitoring, and variance analysis
  • Balance quality care with operational efficiency in a 24/7 department
  • Share healthcare economics and policy updates impacting emergency services

Engage the Community

  • Represent Riverside Health System through community outreach and emergency preparedness initiatives
  • Support participation in at least two community events annually aligned with RHS mission and values

What You Bring

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Required)

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience (Required)
  • Emergency Department nursing experience (Strongly Preferred)
  • Prior supervisory or charge nurse experience (Preferred)

Skills

  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making in high-acuity situations
  • Ability to lead, coach, and support teams in a fast-paced ED setting
  • Proficiency with triage, emergency assessment, and patient flow management
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Licensure & Certification

  • Active RN license in Virginia or a compact state (Required)
  • Emergency or critical care certification (e.g., CEN, CCRN) (Preferred)
