Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Position is located at Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH). A negative drug screen is required as a condition of employment.

All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion.

The purpose of the Clinical Therapist position is to provide therapeutic groups, individual therapy, treatment planning and assessments for the patients admitted to the hospital. The incumbent is identified as the primary therapist that assists the patient throughout their hospital stay with any situations related to their psychiatric care and treatment. This includes routine understanding of the therapy process, crisis intervention, assistance in post-discharge support to reduce re-hospitalization, revisions to the treatment plan and working across disciplines or with the Treatment Team.

The essential functions of this position require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Must be able to observe and respond to residents in distress.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This position is an integral and critical part of the overall care and treatment for the patients of the hospital. The incumbent provides therapeutic groups, individual therapy, treatment planning and assessments for the patients admitted to the hospital. The incumbent is identified as the primary therapist that assists the patient throughout their hospital stay with any situations related to their psychiatric care and treatment. This includes routine understanding of the therapy process, crisis intervention, assistance in post-discharge support to reduce re-hospitalization, revisions to the treatment plan and working across disciplines or with the Interdisciplinary Team to get other discipline concerns met.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide group and individual psychotherapy to reduce symptoms/distress, educate the patient, and facilitate placement in the community. Provide crisis intervention.
  • For assigned patients, treatment plans are prepared in conjunction with the input of the patient, other team members and are based on the presenting clinical symptoms.
  • Document treatment plans and assessments in a clear, complete and timely manner. With supervision as needed, clinical planning and diagnostic considerations are included during the initial treatment planning period and throughout the hospitalization.
  • Coordinate with other members of the IDT as well as other therapists, group leaders, and unit staff to provide a cohesive set of treatment offerings for patients on the unit.
  • When assigned as team leader, assure that other members of PTS and other disciplines are aware of relevant patient information.
  • Participates in ongoing departmental and hospital wide education through involvement with staff development and training in new hire orientation or ongoing education to existing staff.
  • Commits to working with advanced practicum social work students on a yearly basis (if students are requesting practicums at OSH – coordinated through/with the director of social services). Student oversight includes education and monitoring of written work in patient charts (with co-signatures) as well as direct observation of clinical activities during training period and direct clinical supervision.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Licensed to practice in the State of Kansas with Masters

Education: Masters as a Social Worker, Psychologist, Psychotherapist

Licensing & Certification: At the time of appointment, candidates for this position must possess a license of temporary license to practice as a Psychologist, Social Woker, or Psychotherapist in the State of Kansas with a master's degree.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years providing therapy to individuals in an inpatient setting.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services. Persons hired must also pass a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with policies of the Department of Aging and Disability Services.
