The Workers' Compensation Administration assures the quick and efficient delivery of indemnity and medical benefits to injured workers at a reasonable cost to employers. The Adjudication Bureau strives to resolve disputes between workers and employer/insurers over a workers' right to receive worker compensation benefits.

Why does the job exist?

The Senior Legal Assistant position provides professional, prompt, and courteous customer service to the public, attorneys, and agency staff. This position will support court monitoring activities and produce accurate and lawful records of proceedings pursuant to WCA rules and statutes. In a prompt and accurate manner, review and proofread legal documents for electronic filing. This position will organize, safeguard, and file exhibits/hearing logs with the Clerk of the Court at the direction of judges, mediators, and agency administrators.

How does it get done?

Scheduling legal proceedings and mediations according to the WCA statutes, regulations, agency policies and procedures for case presentment to judges based on input from lawyers, adjusters, and litigants. Resolving minor disputes between parties, attorneys, and adjusters without involving the judge. Analyzing whether documents are appropriate for submission to staff members without a need for hearing. Serving as the first point of contact to external parties and has the authority to determine whether contact with judge is appropriate or impermissible ex-parte contact. Balancing of time management skills, scheduling work with processing demands; heavy workload; dealing with the public. The position requires dealing with difficult and distressed persons who are participants in the WCA system, the Incumbent assists the parties while avoiding giving legal advice. Court monitoring.

Who are the customers?

The position serves both internal and external stakeholders such as adjusters, attorneys, other bureaus, and workers. The primary job duties are directly working with the assigned judge and other judges' legal assistants.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the Senior Legal Assistant position has experience in the following: managing schedules and calendars, comprehensive written and verbal skills, significant experience with Microsoft products, familiarity with court process or work performed in a legal setting.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting basic legal research, maintaining a case management/tracking system, and directly related clerical, secretarial, or office administration experience utilizing legal terminology, procedures, and documents. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Drivers License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Certification as a Court Monitor completed within 6 months of hire

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting, and reaching may be required. Ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints. Frequent use of office machines and equipment. Greeting and directing the public in person or via the telephone. Must be able to lift 25-30 lbs. Occasional travel may be required. Experience using Microsoft Office applications is preferred.
