What's the job?

About the role

We are looking for a motivated QA Engineer (Automation, Playwright) to join the Colleague Commerce team, which builds tools used by store colleagues to handle customer orders, queries and in‑store online ordering. This automation‑first role focuses on end‑to‑end and API testing for a business‑critical system: you will help build a new DotCom Plus platform (a greenfield rewrite of the current ATG‑based system that will selectively reuse existing components) with an initial rollout for B&Q and multi‑brand deployment planned from early 2027. The position requires strong JavaScript/Node.js automation skills (Playwright preferred), a pragmatic approach to ensuring product quality in a 24/7 operational environment, and a focus on high reliability, API stability and fast delivery cycles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation testing efforts using Playwright (primary) and other JS testing tools
  • Design, implement and maintain automated end‑to‑end and API test suites integrated into CI/CD
  • Execute API, integration and regression tests to validate functionality, performance and stability
  • Minimise manual testing; design manual tests only for uncovered edge cases
  • Log, track and prioritise defects; collaborate with developers to ensure timely fixes
  • Contribute to test strategy, estimation and planning; ensure full test lifecycle coverage
  • Provide clear test reports and present quality status to stakeholders
  • Improve test processes, tooling and test data management; mentor peers in automation best practices
  • Support performance and reliability testing activities and help identify bottlenecks

What you'll bring

Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience with JavaScript/Node.js test automation
  • Proven hands‑on experience with Playwright (preferred) or similar frameworks (Cypress, Puppeteer)
  • Experience in API testing (Postman, Newman, or Playwright API; ability to design positive/negative/security tests)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins) and integrating automated tests into pipelines
  • Good SQL skills for data validation and test data preparation
  • Understanding of test design techniques, test planning and defect reporting
  • Experience with version control (Git) and branching workflows
  • Excellent English (written and spoken) and strong communication skills
  • Automation‑first mindset; comfortable working in a predominantly automated testing environment

Nice to have

  • Experience with performance testing tools and analysing results
  • Familiarity with Kafka or event‑driven architectures
  • Experience with test orchestration or service virtualisation
  • Prior exposure to retail/e‑commerce platforms, especially ATG/DotCom ecosystems
