The overall function of this position is to assist Professional Engineers and/or higher level Construction Inspectors in the performance of construction inspection work and general contract administration duties required of a District Project Engineer’s Construction Office. Specialized areas of responsibility include Portland Cement Concrete Inspection, Superpave Asphaltic Concrete Pavement Inspection, Embankment and Base Course Inspection, Structural Concrete Inspection and Subsurface Drainage Installation Inspection. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform all construction contract administration and related duties with minimal supervision and be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Inspect construction work to ensure compliance with departmental policies, standards, specifications, and project plans.
  • Complete and process construction documentation such as field diaries, reports, and estimates.
  • Enter, review, and maintain construction project data in departmental systems (e.g., MATT, SiteManager, Content Manager).
  • Apply DOTD engineering policies and procedures while working in the Project Engineer’s office and at construction sites.
  • Serve as the primary construction inspector in assigned areas of specialization or certification.
  • Determine material sampling requirements and verify materials, haul quantities, and survey elevations and alignments.
  • Complete required training and support efficient project operations, including assisting other staff as needed.

Appointment Type: Probational and Promotional

Career Progression: This Position may be filled as a Construction Inspector 1, 2, 3, or 4

Work Schedule: Work hours may vary.

Compensation: Below is the starting hourly rate for each level. Additionally, this position receives an additional $2.00/hour Premium Pay for every hour worked.

  • Construction Inspector 1 - $14.98/hourly
  • Construction Inspector 2 - $17.15/hourly
  • Construction Inspector 3 - $19.63/hourly
  • Construction Inspector 4 - $22.47/hourly
