Primary Purpose of Position

The staff nurse, a registered professional nurse is responsible for the nursing care of patients and for assisting the physician/clinician at the Mary S. Shook Student Health Services. The nurse will work in any of the various areas of the clinic, such as: triage, observation, appointment vital signs, after hours, limited service hours, direct assistance with clinicians, immunizations, allergy, and back hall nursing. Duties can change based on organizational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Ability to work independently using nursing protocols and procedures.
  • Able to multitask in a high paced environment.
  • Able to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and community stakeholders.
  • Proficient with Electronic Health Record software and computer usage.
  • Ability to complete a patient triage, history, medication history and assessment.
  • Ability to accurately determine needed immunizations and administer them appropriately.
  • Ability to perform nursing functions for care of the patient while in the clinic to include: obtaining lab specimens, dressings, emergency care, administration of medications and IV’s, and health education and direct assistance with clinicians.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in providing nursing care in the College Health setting.

Have at least five years of nursing experience, working knowledge of North Carolina required immunizations, ability to relate and work with the college age population.

Possess years of recent nursing experience in a direct patient care role.

Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of basic nursing principles and techniques for the specific area of practice. This includes the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation), medication administration, patient education and emergency care. Ability to administer medications on a timely and accurate basis.

Communication: Ability to use interview techniques that assist the patient/client in describing his/her symptoms and assist in discerning the situation, using an organizational approach. Ability to communicate information to patients, families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.

The normal work schedule for this employee is 40 hours per week. with occasional after hours and weekend rotation. This is a 9 month position from mid August through mid May

Physical Demands of Position

Physical effort includes a great deal of walking during the day. Careful attention to detail along with mental accuracy with administration of medication is critical. Mental clarity and concentration is necessary to provide detailed accuracy with patient care, along with long periods of sitting using a computer. Ability to changing tasks at a moment’s notice while maintaining calm composure and excellent customer service skills. Must have clear visual acuity with or without correction to prepare medications, provide care, and document on an electronic medical record. Nurse must have the physical ability to perform CPR and/or medical crisis skills. Nurse must be able to provide both oral and written reports in an accurate, clear, concise manner to communicate. Nurse must be able to maintain both physical and emotional/mental composure while working.
