Job Title: Utility Mechanic Department: Engineering- Seasonal

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Job Summary:

The Utility Mechanic performs duties necessary to maintain facility grounds and other property owned and/or occupied by the hospital. This position is seasonal and will last approximately December to April, dependent on weather.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance and care of facility grounds, including trash removal, lawn care, snow and ice removal.
  • Initiate and maintain accurate documentation to verify task completion.
  • Work independently to select priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Assist Engineering department as needed with daily tasks.
  • Maintains proper level of stock and supplies as department requires.
  • Maintains a safe environment for staff and visitors.
  • Demonstrate complete knowledge for safety policies and procedures.
  • Requisition supplied and equipment per policy.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials per policy.
  • Handle telephone information with courtesy, accuracy and respect for confidentiality.
  • Follow the chain of command appropriately to resolve problems and concerns.
  • Consult with and keeps supervisor informed of activities, needs and problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively and communicate frequently with all members of the health care team.
  • Ability to cost-effectively use of resources and supplies.
  • Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience in landscaping and snow plowing required.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s license required.
  • Working Conditions:
  • Requires flexibility in schedule and participation in “on-call” rotation.
  • Position requires use and operation of snow removal tools/machinery.
  • Able to lift, carry, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds using techniques of body mechanics for patient and person safety.
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching and pulling during the work day.
  • Requires climbing and maintaining body balance on ladders, scaffolding, or other high structures.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and illnesses.
  • Occasional exposure to electrical hazards and hazards of operating large equipment.
  • Requires following hospital infection control procedures per policy.
  • Attendance at assigned date and location ensures job requirements are met.
  • Actively participates in Quality Assurance programs and CQI.
  • Actively participate in cross-training, in-service programs; attend all mandatory classes, meetings and committees as required; complete department-specific requirements/competencies.
  • Complies with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and required immunizations.

Pay Range: $16.00-$19.20/hour

Employee salary is based on commensurate experience and other qualifications.
