Senior Scientist Metallurgist – R&D Filler Metals

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden

Within our Global Filler Metals organization, the R&D Filler Metals department plays a central role in shaping the future of welding materials worldwide. Our Research Team drives advanced materials research, method and tool development, and deep metallurgical expertise to support breakthrough product innovation.

We are now looking for a Senior Scientist Metallurgist to join our Research Team in Gothenburg. In this senior role, you will lead high-impact research projects, drive scientific excellence, and support the development of cutting-edge welding solutions used across global industries.

Your responsibilities:

As a Senior Scientist Metallurgist, you will:

  • Make significant and innovative contributions by initiating, managing, and supporting research projects in line with the R&D Filler Metals Roadmap.
  • Drive deep expertise in welding metallurgy to accelerate development timelines and strengthen ESAB’s long-term knowledge base.
  • Conduct advanced investigations of metallic materials—primarily steel—including weldments, process methods, and raw materials.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in metallographic and mechanical testing, laboratory methods, and relevant standards.
  • Supervise and mentor Material Engineers and Laboratory Technicians.
  • Provide expert technical consultation to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze welding-related problems, identify root causes, and propose effective solutions.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and impactful research reports.
  • Act in accordance with Central Laboratory quality policies and support audit activities to ensure continuous improvement.

Your profile:

We believe you bring:

  • A university degree in Metallurgy, Materials Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • 10-15 years of laboratory experience in advanced metallographic investigations and applied materials research, preferably related to electric welding processes.
  • Strong expertise in steel phase transformations, microstructures, crystallography, and experimental techniques (light/electron microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy).
  • Broad knowledge of welding processes and associated technologies.
  • Familiarity with thermodynamic and kinetic simulation software such as Thermo-Calc.
  • A solid understanding of mechanical properties and related testing methods (hardness, tensile, impact, bending, fatigue, residual stress evaluation).
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 requirements, method validation, and measurement uncertainty.
  • Documented leadership experience with the ability to guide teams and manage complex projects.
  • Strong pedagogical skills and the ability to facilitate effective knowledge transfer.
  • A proactive, analytical, and innovative mentality, open-minded, creative, and driven to achieve results.
  • Excellent communication skills in both Swedish and English.
