Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Mate to work full time aboard USAV Worthy, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. Astrion has worked extensively at Kwajalein where it has earned a reputation for on-time delivery of high-quality products tailored to the needs of its clients.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
- Graduate of a state or federal maritime academy as a deck officer, or U.S. Naval or Coast Guard Academy. A High School diploma and 5 years of experience as a licensed Master/Mate aboard comparable or larger vessels may be substituted for the formal education requirement.
- Seven (7) years’ combined experience as a Master/Mate of which 3 years must be as master.
- Shall hold a U.S. Coast Guard 1600T Master license with all applicable STCW endorsements for international waters or a valid RMI level 5 license and a valid RADAR endorsement
- Shall hold all accompanying endorsements for management level STCW/International ship’s officers license including by not limited to: RADAR/ARPA, ECDIS, GMDSS, Advanced Firefighting, and vessel security endorsements.

- Ability to pass a federal background check to obtain and hold a DoD Common Access Card (CAC). Current U.S. Citizenship Required
- Ability to pass a post offer drug screen and physical/medical clearance. Current and Valid U.S. Passport*.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
- Experience or background in government/public vessel operations.
- Experience as a deck officer on a vessel in a reduced operating status (ROS)
- Knowledge of common safety practices and protective equipment used on an ocean-going vessel.
- Self-starter, team player and conscientious worker.
- Familiar with lifting and deploying equipment from and to the deck using winches, cranes, A-frames, and other lifting devices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chief mate is the 2nd in command on the vessel and must work closely with the vessel Master, Chief Engineer, and other personnel involved with vessel operations including RGNEXT range safety personnel and embarked personnel. The USAV Worthy is a 200 ft long, 1,483 ton, special purpose vessel with a diesel electric propulsion system and a bow thruster. She typically carries a crew of 13 and up to 20 embarked mission personnel. The Chief Mate shall enforce laws of the United States, which are those of a ship's officers to enforce, and all applicable rules and regulations of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, and applicable host nation or international regulations when out of the United States.
- Be willing and able to act as the vessel master if the master is unavailable, on leave, or otherwise incapacitated.
- Supervises crew of 13 (7 permanent party with the addition of 6 surge for missions).
- Reports to the Master and the RGNEXT Technical lead for Range and Mission Safety
- Coordinates with mission staff (supernumeraries) and other personnel on Kwajalein for logistics, provisioning, re-stocking, and requesting maintenance activities for the vessel.
- Supervises bridge/navigational watch-standers (Mate and AB watch standers)
- Aids in training and development of crew members.
- Work with the vessel Master and the Chief Engineer in executing the USAV Worthy maintenance program.
- Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel in accordance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Ensures the vessel maintains ABS Load‐line and U.S. Army standards.
- Remains on standby/recall status to the vessel during dockside periods, as needed.
- Participates in the vessels off site OCCM (On‐Condition Cyclic Maintenance) Dry‐docking on a three-year basis
- Responsible for the safe navigation of the ship
- Responsible for the safety and security of the ship and embarked personnel
- Ensure logbooks and records are maintained and accurately completed.
- Complies with and enforces safety regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures both within the Astrion polices and the relevant and applicable RGNEXT OSHE policies: including but not limited to RGNEXT OSHE hearing conservation and respiratory protection programs.
- Ensures the vessel is operated and navigated in accordance with applicable US laws/regulations and host nation laws/regulations.
- Perform Fire and Emergency duties associated with the Chief Mate’s billet on Ship’s Station Bill.
