The Facilities Manager is responsible for supporting the physical operations, maintenance, space planning, and event logistics across the College of Architecture’s key facilities, including the iconic S.R. Crown Hall. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the College’s spaces function safely, efficiently, and in alignment with its academic and community mission.

COMMUNICATIONS

The Facilities Manager reports directly to the Director of Fabrication and collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and other university personnel. A key component of this role is supervising and mentoring a team of student workers who assist with daily operational tasks, classroom setups, maintenance, and event support. The Facilities Manager also works closely with Fabrication Center staff and provides assistance with operations and coordination when needed.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years in architectural design, construction administration, or facilities management, preferably in an educational or institutional environment.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office/iWork Suite
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience as well as experience coordinating cross-functional teams
  • Ability to provide flexible support across both building operations and fabrication-related activities

Key Responsibility

Facilities Oversight & Building Stewardship

  • Manage the daily operations, maintenance, and repairs for four College buildings.
  • Serve as the primary contact for building safety, infrastructure concerns, and emergency response.
  • Assist in long-term planning and capital improvement projects in partnership with the Director of Fabrication and Facilities and University Facilities teams.
  • Support historic preservation initiatives and represent the College in facilities-related matters.
  • Help maintain and enforce building use guidelines through the College’s Facilities Handbook.

Percentage Of Time 50 Key Responsibility

Academic & Space Planning Support

  • Implement space planning solutions to support the College’s academic, research, and faculty needs.
  • Oversee classroom and workspace setup; equipment purchase, fabrication, and installation; and technology integration.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule a team of student workers to carry out operational tasks.
  • Support the NCARB AXP internship credit process for qualified student employees.
  • Collaborate with College departments and University units on facilities scheduling, upgrades, and improvements.
  • Provide operational support to Fabrication Center staff when needed, including coordination of shared spaces, materials handling, or equipment logistics.

Percentage Of Time 30 Key Responsibility

Event Setup & Program Support

  • Lead the physical setup and logistical coordination for major College and external events, such as:
    • Exhibitions, accreditation reviews, and College presentations
    • Lectures, symposia, and speaker events
    • Commencement, Summer Experiment in Architecture, and academic programs
    • Community and design-related events like INOMA Pipeline Camp, Block City, and alumni programs
  • Work with University Event Services, Public Safety, IT, and external vendors to ensure successful event execution.
  • Provide after-hours support for events and building emergencies as required.

Percentage Of Time 20 Work Hours

Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m.
