Job Overview

The Assistant Director Special Education Secondary will direct and manage the planning, programming, and implementation of supports and services for students served with special education services at assigned secondary campuses. Significant communication with campus administrators will be expected of the Assistant Director Special Education Secondary Programming in order to support the implementation of special education services and to monitor and oversee any training that is needed on the campuses. The incumbent will also be responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of the instructional and behavior support provided by the Special Education Leadership Team at the secondary level. The Assistant Director Special Education will also supervise and build capacity of the Special Education staff.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Assist the Special Education Director in the development and implementation of federal, state, and local policies, procedures and requirements
  • Assist with monthly count analysis and staffing model
  • Update and maintain written guidelines for the Special Education Administrative Procedures as directed
  • Oversee the implementation of ESYS and Summer professional development as directed
  • Oversee the implementation of the Special Education Department Plan and TEA Corrective Action Plans as directed
  • Conduct appropriate special education file reviews and audits as directed

Service Delivery and Program Support

  • Design and implement special education programming and related services for assigned campuses across the district
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of services and recommend improvements to meet the needs of Special Education programming at the secondary level
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data to be used in program evaluation
  • Provide guidance and support to campus regarding appropriate Transition planning
  • Act as a liaison between the Special Education department and individual campuses to coordinate a plan of support related to special education programming and implementation
  • Provide oversight and leadership to campuses in crisis management situations that arise on campuses

Instructional Leadership

  • Plan and provide professional development activities for Special Education personnel, district administration, and campus administration
  • Supervise Special Education Leadership Team staff, to include goal setting, performance appraisal, and ongoing coaching and leadership development
  • Promote the District's vision of implementing inclusive services, including oversight of staff utilizing evidence-based supports to maintain students in their least restrictive environment
  • Stay current on the state Accountability systems, Results Driven Accountability, and other TEA systems designed to measure student outcomes
  • Build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of cooperative and mutual respect
  • Influence others to be excited and committed to furthering the Department's and District's Vision, Mission, and Objectives

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assist in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring of assigned staff
  • Initiate personnel actions including documentation and termination under the guidance of Human Resources
  • Recommend personnel actions including transfer and discipline of assigned personnel
  • Performance appraisal of assigned employees
  • Address complaints and resolve problems
  • Assist in the absence of the Director of Special Education by assuming responsibilities of the Director

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements

  • Master's degree Education or related field
  • Valid Special Education Certification SBEC teaching certification or other Special Education license (LSSP, SLP, BCBA, etc.)
  • Valid Texas Mid-Management or Principal Certification preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Special Education
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Special Education at a district level
  • Proficient in using Windows Operating System as well as Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas both verbally and in writing

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

Additional Information

  • This position requires travel to various campuses, to conferences and meetings in and out of state.
