General Purpose of Job:

Assign ICD and CPT/Surgery codes and abstracting to outpatient medical record types including ED, Clinic, Urgent Care, Ancillary, and Recurring's from a full-time remote location in accordance with the department’s established accuracy and productivity requirements.

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Reviews the medical record and assigns the appropriate ICD and CPT codes.
  • Codes inpatient and outpatient records.
  • Monitors the “uncoded DNB” work queue.
  • Codes records in a timely manner.
  • Maintains satisfactory coding productivity performance.
  • Abstracts data into the patient abstract fields.
  • Prints coding summary reports for inpatient records.
  • Responds to coding requests from internal and external customers, i.e. business office, physician office.
  • Requests diagnosis from physician’s office as needed.
  • Participates in attending educational programs, hospital and departmental staff meeting.
  • Performs other duties as required by Operations Manager and/or Director.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1 -2 years experience of coding in an acute care hospital setting preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Certified as any of the following: CCA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, RHIT or RHIA.

Must maintain continuing education hours to maintain certification.
