Security Benefit (SB) is looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join the Data Office and support the Customer Centric Delivery Team and its instrumentation of associated Data Products. This role is to support various data management engagements. The ideal candidate may work remotely but will be required to travel to our home office in Topeka, Kansas or our New York office periodically. Security Benefit associates are working in a hybrid environment with both remote and on-site work.

About the Role:

The Senior Data Engineer will design, develop, and maintain robust data systems built around Microsoft SQL Server and related Microsoft data technologies. This role focuses on optimizing database performance, building reliable ETL processes, and ensuring data quality and availability for analytics, reporting, and enterprise applications.

The Senior Data Engineer position reports to the Head of Solution Development and the ideal candidate may work remotely but will be required to travel to our home office in Topeka, Kansas or our New York office periodically. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and fully test application enhancements from business requirements
  • Perform data requirements analysis and develop mapping requirements for data sourcing, transformation and complex logic
  • Defines and develops configurations, and operational/administration guidelines for data integration layer to provide it as a service to internal teams.
  • Develops ETL, ELT and other service-based integration jobs as part of overall Data application delivery
  • Create documentation as required by SDLC
  • Communicate, escalate, and/or resolve risks and issues related to assigned projects/initiatives
  • Provide operational support of data solutions, including resolution of incidents, service requests, planned support activities, and problem management
  • Create and maintain change management requests and follow the change management process
  • Contribute to the identification and/or delivery of related technical process improvements
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable data pipelines using MS SQL Server, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and related tools.
  • Monitor database performance, perform tuning, indexing, and query optimization to ensure system efficiency and scalability.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Business Information Systems, or equivalent experience
  • Data management and integration experience such as data management data process ownership and/or data factory required
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in software analysis, development, engineering, and support
  • 8+ years’ experience with SQL in a Relational Database Environment (Microsoft SQL preferred) with ability to code medium complexity SQL.
  • 6+ years’ experience in object-oriented programming, JavaScript, or ELT/ETL tools such as SSIS and Fivetran
  • Experience in Data Warehouse is a must.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud services a plus.
  • Experience working cross-functionally or across organizations.
  • Experience with Snowflake a plus.
  • Experience with Coalesce a plus.
  • Experience leading and mentoring junior engineers, promoting best practices in database design, coding standards, and DevOps for data pipelines.
  • Ability to communicate openly and honestly with colleagues. Takes personal responsibility for the quality and content of the work and complies with information confidentiality requirements where applicable.
