About the College/Unit/Department

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music (www.music.uga.edu) is among the leading schools of music in the region and nationally. Home to approximately five hundred students and a faculty of sixty-five, the Hodgson School includes comprehensive programs, with degrees at the undergraduate level through the master’s and doctorate. Our celebrated faculty, outstanding facilities, and talented students build a supportive and rich environment for artistic and scholarly growth. Each year the School hosts nearly 350 public performances. Graduates from our programs have been internationally successful in their chosen fields.

The HHSOM piano area (https://music.uga.edu/piano) features internationally recognized faculty, attracting award-winning young musicians from the United States and abroad. The Hodgson School became Georgia’s first All-Steinway School in 1996 and boasts outstanding performance and practice facilities with keyboard instruments maintained by two full-time Steinway-trained piano technicians. Of note are recent purchases of a Steinway Spirio piano, a Hamburg concert grand, and 30 new practice instruments. The piano area benefits from a collaborative relationship with the nationally recognized UGA Performing Arts Center, with regular masterclasses by acclaimed PAC artists including, in 2025-2026, Angela Hewitt, Haochen Zhang, Leif-Ove Andsnes, and Isata Kanneh-Mason. Piano faculty also host regional and national symposia, including serving as host for three national festivals of the American Liszt Society, an annual Piano Symposium, and a biennial Chamber Music Athens festival. Piano area students benefit from ample opportunities, including a biennial showcase at Steinway Hall in New York City.

Minimum Qualifications

A terminal degree in piano (such as a Doctor of Musical Arts, conferred no later than July 1, 2026).

Position Summary

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia (UGA) announces a tenure track, assistant professor of piano search seeking a colleague to join a vibrant piano area with a strong national and international reputation. Primary duties include applied instruction to undergraduate and graduate piano majors; teaching courses in piano literature, accompanying, and/or other areas aligned with candidate’s expertise; coaching of chamber music; active participation in area activities and recruitment. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure track appointment. Targeted start date: August 1, 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an artist-teacher of piano.
  • Teach applied piano lessons to students from undergraduate through doctoral levels
  • Actively participate in student recruitment in and out of state.
  • Teach piano-related courses as needed, including but not limited to piano literature and accompanying.
  • Coach chamber music.
  • Maintain a productive career as a research/creative scholar and performer
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Contribute to a dynamic, holistic music program that prepares students for a music career in the 21st century.
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Requirements

Candidates lacking a terminal degree must document exceptional accomplishments as a professional pianist and piano pedagogue. Candidates without a doctoral degree must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.
