Senior Java Developer

Industry: Financial Services

Location: Toronto. Hybrid: 2 days in office

Duration of Contract/Perm: 6 month rolling contract, up to 2 years

Hours/week: 40

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Senior Java Developer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in modern Java technologies, proven experience in leading projects, and the ability to work independently while ensuring timely delivery. A background in banking or financial services is preferred but not mandatory. This role requires a proactive individual who can quickly grasp new concepts and drive development tasks end-to-end.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development efforts and ensure project milestones are met on schedule.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using Java v17, v21, Spring (v5), and Spring Boot (3.x).
  • Develop REST APIs and microservices within a microservices architecture.
  • Work with Oracle and SQL databases, including writing functions, procedures, and packages.
  • Collaborate with development teams on design discussions and provide technical expertise.
  • Contribute to ongoing enhancement of existing products and participate in future upgrades.
  • Participate in DevOps activities, including CI/CD pipeline management using Azure DevOps (experience with GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Actions, Jenkins is a plus).
  • Ensure end-to-end understanding of the development lifecycle, including code repositories and deployment processes.
  • Keep team members aligned and ensure adherence to project timelines.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in Java 17/21.
  • Experience with Spring and Spring Boot frameworks.
  • Proficiency in REST API development and microservices architecture.
  • Solid understanding of Oracle and SQL databases.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines and environment navigation.
  • Ability to work independently, lead projects, and ensure timely delivery.
  • Excellent communication and follow-up skills to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with Kafka, query systems, and pub/sub messaging.
  • Background in banking or financial services.
  • Experience with asynchronous programming and queuing systems (e.g., MQ, Solace).
  • Previous exposure to Agile methodologies.
