Lab Technician - 3D Printing, Testing & Model Shop

Job Summary

The Lab Technician will support the delivery of machining and test engineering activities across various programs. This role focuses on manual machining to support part fabrication, tooling, and fixture development, as well as providing support for 3D printing operations. The machinist will work closely with engineering teams to meet technical, cost, and schedule requirements, while also contributing to continuous improvement efforts within the shop and test environments. This person must be available to work onsite in our Lake Forest office Monday through Friday.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • (30%) Perform precision machining using mills, lathes, and manual machines to support part fabrication, tooling, and fixture development.
  • (30%) Provide hands-on support for additive manufacturing (3D printing), including setup, operation, and post-processing.
  • (10%) Collaborate with engineering teams to support prototyping, testing, and development projects while ensuring technical, cost, and schedule requirements are met.
  • (10%) Respond to machine breakdowns and work to identify and fix the issue to minimize downtime.
  • (5%) Assist in the design and development of custom fixtures and jigs using CAD tools.
  • (5%) Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of shop equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • (5%) Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives related to machining and workflow optimization.
  • (5%) Read and interpret engineering drawings (E-drawings) and CAD files to ensure accurate fabrication.

Education and Experience Profile

  • High School Diploma or Vocational Degree required.
  • 0-5 years of experience in managing projects and/or teams.

Required Skills

  • Experience / Familiarity in Machine Shop and the Test lab environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook.
  • Organized, flexible, and able to multitask in a dynamic team environment.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues to create modeling definitions.
  • Prior experience with legacy Haas CNC machinery is highly desirable.
  • Prior Experience with Welding is highly desirable.
  • Experience with CAD design software, preferably Creo Parametric.
  • Technical knowledge of product qualification testing processes and guidelines.
  • Solid working knowledge of the Machinery’s Handbook and general machining practices; familiarity with industry standards such as ASME Y14.5, ISO 2768, and ANSI B4.1 is beneficial.

Work Environment:

Working conditions are normal for a Model shop and Test Lab environment.

Pay Range: $61,600-$96,800.

This “base salary range” is a reasonable estimate for this position at the time of posting. Pay within each range is based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, to primary work job-related knowledge, skills, experience, business requirements and geographic location. ASSA ABLOY conducts regular review of compensation ranges and therefore reserves the right to alter this range at any given time.
