Position Description

Anne Arundel County Government is currently hiring for a full-time permanent Recreation and Parks Facility Superintendent position at the Department of Recreation and Parks.

This is responsible supervisory work in the operation, maintenance, and improvement of a large county park or facility.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work includes the planning, inspection, and supervision of the work of employees in operating and maintaining the park and the enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations applicable to its use. Work is performed under general direction and is reviewed by a Division Chief through inspections, conferences, and reports.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Instructs employees about daily priorities and proper work procedures and inspects work for methods and results; inspects facilities and grounds for hazards or unsafe conditions; maintains security of park or facility and directs protection of park or facility against fire, vandalism, and other risks.
  • Checks fees collected and keeps record of daily income and expenditures; prepares deposits; prepares financial and administrative reports; requisitions and purchases materials and supplies; develops and monitors park budget; maintains cost controls.
  • Oversees operation of park or facility daily; takes responsibility for enforcement of park laws, rules, and regulations; oversees preparation of informative literature for distribution to park patrons.
  • Prepares employee work schedules; hires, counsels, and evaluates the work of employees.
  • Represents the County at public meetings related to park and facility operation and maintenance; plans and directs park landscaping, reforestation, and erosion control programs; plans and evaluates volunteer programs.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of park and facility management, maintenance, and operation.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety practices involved in park and facility operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, methods, and practices essential to the maintenance, repair, and limited construction of parks and facilities.
  • Knowledge of the basics of budget preparation and financial recording, and reporting.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, appointed and elected officials, subordinates, volunteers, and other divisions of the department.
  • Ability to prepare work schedules and supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Ability to develop and apply policies applicable to the park or facility.
  • Ability to develop and conduct park and facility use programs relating to the mission of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in park management or a related field

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) or more years of experience in park operation and maintenance, including six (6) or more months of supervisory experience and a valid non-commercial motor vehicle operator's license

NOTE: Accredited University or College is the recognition from an accrediting agency that an institution maintains a certain level of educational standards. The U.S. Department of Education maintains a database of accrediting agencies it recognizes for schools within the United States.

For a University or College outside the United States, the applicant must provide documentation of accreditation and educational equivalency, which can be accomplished through a credential evaluation service. Applicants with a foreign degree must provide this documentation upon the close of the announcement.

Supplemental Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following:

1. Intermediate level skills in Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, and Google Suite.

2. Considerable experience in park management, park maintenance, and management of employees.

3. Experience in the management of a facility/park budget.
