The City of Chesapeake’s Department of Public Utilities is seeking a motivated and skilled Sanitary Sewer Pump Station Mechanic I to join our dynamic team. As a member of our dedicated team, you will play a critical role in serving our community and ensuring the safe and effective operation of our sanitary sewer pump stations.

As a Pump Station Mechanic I, your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring pump station Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and responding to any report of malfunction to restore operation.
  • Performing maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of pump station equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical components.
  • Conducting routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure the proper functioning of the pump station.
  • Monitoring condition and operational status of control panel, electrical and telemetry systems and reporting issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Assisting in the installation and calibration of new equipment and systems as needed.
  • Operation of specialized motor equipment to support Pump Station operations including pump and haul and wet well cleaning.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed, parts used and system conditions.
  • General housekeeping and ground maintenance of pump station facilities.

Required Qualifications

Vocational/Educational Requirement:Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.

Experience:In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required within six months of hire. Special skills or equipment certification may be required, including. Tanker endorsement. OSHA 10, OSHA 30, confined space welding certifications desired.

Special Requirements:Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces.

  • Previous experience working in industrial maintenance, pump station operations or sanitary sewer maintenance and repair
