Recreational Sports is part of the OSL, which is dedicated to supporting students' health, safety, and success throughout their IU experience. The Recreational Sports mission is to connect, inform, and inspire individuals to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Serving over 36,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members annually, we offer diverse programs across 2 multipurpose facilities, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, adventure spaces, and more. Our team includes 46 professional staff and over 800 student employees.

Job Summary

Part-time staff at IU Recreational Sports are responsible for creating a safe and engaging environment that supports the health and well-being of all participants. These entry-level roles span a variety of focus areas including open recreation, fitness, operations, and outreach and are grounded in a commitment to participant support, safety, and community building.

Each role offers hands-on experience in communication, time management, conflict resolution, and teamwork skills that are transferable to any future career. All positions require active participation in the RecSports community and a dedication to fostering a positive and respectful atmosphere for all.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

Recreation Assistant

  • Provides excellent customer service and support participants throughout their visit to Recreational Sports facilities.
  • Greets participants and staff professionally while managing equipment check-out and verifying facility access at the Welcome Center.
  • Supports cleanliness and organization by laundering towels and uniforms for intramural and club sports programs.
  • Rotates between the welcome center and equipment checkout.
  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure high-quality service and foster positive relationships.
  • Promotes a safe and inclusive environment by communicating and enforcing facility policies.
  • Maintains awareness of job expectations by attending team meetings, completing required training, and staying current through email and internal communications.

Fitness Assistant

  • Assists participants in the safe and effective use of fitness equipment and workout spaces.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization in fitness areas by cleaning equipment, re-racking weights, and restocking towels and supplies.
  • Conducts regular equipment checks and report maintenance needs to the appropriate team.
  • Ensures adherence to safety and facility policies when participants are using the strength and cardio spaces.
  • Responds to accidents or emergencies in accordance with Recreational Sports safety protocols.
  • Stays informed about Recreational Sports programs and services to assist participants and answer questions.
  • Participates in team meetings and training sessions to stay informed and connected.
  • Supports additional tasks and projects as assigned to support the team and improve the facility.

Operations Assistant

  • Maintains cleanliness and safety by regularly sanitizing equipment, shared spaces, and high-touch items, and documenting cleaning activities as required.
  • Assists with event, class, and activity setup, including moving equipment and preparing spaces.
  • Provides excellent customer service to everyone entering the facility.
  • Responds to accidents or emergencies in accordance with Recreational Sports safety protocols.
  • Stays informed about Recreational Sports programs and services to effectively help others and answer questions.
  • Participates in team meetings and training sessions to stay informed and connected.
  • Supports additional tasks and projects as assigned to support the team and improve the facility.

Outreach Assistant

  • Promotes IU Recreational Sports through events, social media, and creative marketing. Helps fellow Hoosiers discover their something whether it's fitness, sports, or just having fun.
  • Greets participants and staff professionally while managing equipment check-out and verifying facility access at the Welcome Center.
  • Supports cleanliness and organization by laundering towels and uniforms for intramural and club sports programs.
  • Rotates between the welcome center and equipment checkout.
  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure high-quality service and foster positive relationships.
  • Promotes a safe and inclusive environment by communicating and enforcing facility policies.
  • Maintains awareness of job expectations by attending team meetings, completing required training, and staying current through email and internal communications.
  • Engages with students at campus tabling events by sharing information about Recreational Sports programs, answering questions, and distributing promotional materials.
  • Assists with marketing initiatives by posting signage, delivering materials between facilities, organizing promotional items, and reviewing digital content for accuracy.
  • Collaborates with the team to create engaging social media content, including brainstorming, filming, and promoting Recreational Sports programs and events.
  • Supports special outreach projects such as giveaways and themed events to increase student awareness and participation.
  • Participates in monthly team meetings to contribute ideas, receive updates, and assist in planning future events and campaigns.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • General knowledge at the high school level

Preferred

  • College degree
  • Majors in fitness/health-related fields preferred for Fitness Assistant position

SKILLS

Required

Work Location

This is an in-person position.

Bloomington, Indiana

Onsite work will take place at the following campus recreation facilities, depending on the needs of each sporting event:

  • Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC)
  • Bill Garrett Fieldhouse
  • Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex

Advertised Salary

$12.00 - $12.50 per hour

Work-study eligible. Students who are eligible for Federal Work-Study are encouraged to apply. To check your eligibility, log in to your One.IU account and go to View/Manage My Financial Aid. There, you can review your financial aid package and confirm your work-study status.

Potential for merit payrate increases based on performance. Opportunities for advancement.

Work Hours

Not to exceed 29 hours per week across all campus positions

Recreation and Fitness Assistant positions will work an average of 8-12 hours per week

Operations Assistant will work an average of 10-12 hours per week

Outreach Assistant will work an average of 4-10 hours per week
