Please Note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $64,942 to $94,418, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The Montgomery County Government Department of Transportation’s (DOT) mission is to move people and connect places with seamless, equitable transportation options that are safe, environmentally responsible, and support economic growth and vibrancy in Montgomery County. DOT supports its residents, commuters and visitors with transit options and infrastructure that provides seamless transportation services to the public.
The Division of Highway Services (DHS) manages the maintenance of all transportation infrastructure within the County right-of-way including more than 5,400 lane miles of rural, residential, and primary roadways, as well as nearly 1,000 miles of concrete curb, gutter, and sidewalk. The Tree Maintenance Section manages an inventory of over 250,000 street trees and more than 200,000 trees in the rural areas.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Department of Transportation is looking for a Highway Inspector I (Download PDF reader) for its Division of Highway Services.
This position is responsible for the continuous inspection of work being performed by contractors under contracts with the County. The Highway Inspector I is responsible for the quality workmanship, materials, and safety for contracted projects, and CIP Highway Improvements Projects.
The position performs inspections during the progress of the work to provide quality control and assurance on the job. The Highway Inspector I will be responsible for daily field inspection of work performed by private contractors under contract to the County performing highway and street related construction in accordance with the latest edition of the Standards Specifications for Construction and Materials, Maryland State Highway Administration; maintaining daily logs of all site activities; measure and record unit measures of properly constructed work; collecting samples and performing standardized material tests as needed; interpreting results and preparing written reports of findings; overseeing the work of temporary consultant inspectors; provide detailed item quantity ledgers reflecting acceptable work performed. The employees in this class are the front-line force, ensuring the County gets what it has specified and is paying for. The impact of the work is realized daily and directly by road users and property owners through roads, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, rights-of-way, etc. that are effectively maintained. The overall cost of maintenance is also affected.
Responsible for detecting potential problems in various projects such as pavement resurfacing, pavement reconstruction, sidewalk and curb and gutter construction, storm drainpipe replacement / installation and traffic calming measure installation, to include speed hump installation. This position ensures that all requirements of the specifications have been met, and that all workmanship and construction practices are equal to or more than the standards specification requirement in the contract. The inspector guards the County against defects and deficiencies in the work. Through daily inspections that best practice job site safety measures are being taken on every construction site, this ensures the safety of our residents (pedestrian and vehicular), employees and contractors.

This selected individual is REQUIRED to work overtime during inclement weather situations and emergencies, which may include overnight stays.
The Department of Transportation (DOT), Division of Highway Services (DHS) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Highway Inspector I for its Field Operations Section. As Highway Inspector I, this person will perform the following duties but are not limited to:
Experience: Considerable (3 years) experience in construction, maintenance and inspection of roadways, accessory structures (such as storm drains, curbs, gutters and sidewalks) or rights of way (including tree planning, pruning and removal). Knowledge of best paving practices and HMA resurfacing / patching. Knowledge of sediment and erosion control best practices.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Physical Ability: Must be able to stand or walk for long periods, bending, reaching, moving about on uneven terrain and moving objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.
Other: Must be able and willing to work nights and on weekends, as required by projects.

Leave Benefits
