The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) currently has a vacancy for an unclassified Geology Specialist (Professional Geologist) in the Conservation Division Central Office, in Wichita, Kansas. The KCC is a multi-faceted agency responsible for regulating public utilities including electric, natural gas, telecommunication and water companies as well as motor carriers, oil and gas pipelines and oil and gas natural production. The Commission’s headquarters is in Topeka with the Conservation Division Central Office located in Wichita and four Conservation district offices located in Dodge City, Wichita, Chanute, and Hays.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Serving as a primary point of contact, the Administrative Officer plays a critical role within the Commission Office. This role provides direct administrative support to the three KCC Commissioners, managing key scheduling and documentation responsibilities. Additionally, this position oversees the day-to-day operations of the Docket Room, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of docket filings, compliance with regulatory procedures, and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Position Summary:

The Geology Specialist (Professional Geologist) will execute responsibilities in both the Underground Injection Control (UIC) and Production portions of the joint Department.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Administer the Commission rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of correlative rights and prevention of waste of oil and natural gas resources, and overseeing each oil/gas well during its producing life i.e., from the time the well is drilled until the well is plugged.
  • Responsible for administering the Commission rules for providing just and reasonable gas gathering services.
  • Responsible for enforcing EPA standards for Class II injection wells under the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Review UIC injection applications.
  • Maintain injection statistics to ensure protection of fresh and usable waters, hydrocarbons, and correlative rights.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Four years direct experience in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Some positions in the class may require a certificate to practice as an intern geologist in the State of Kansas within two years of appointment. Some positions may require working towards obtaining a professional geologist license as recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions to pursue licensure as a geologist.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Experience proofreading, editing, and composing documents.
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships.
