Job Description Summary

The Automotive Technician III serves as a lead technician responsible for preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and repair work on the university’s mixed fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position provides technical leadership, plans and prioritizes workflow, and ensures high-quality, efficient, and safe fleet operations.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Perform preventative maintenance as well as complex diagnostics and repairs on advanced vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, emission control, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized systems.
  • Serve as the technical expert and primary point of contact for complex repairs and upgrades.
  • Lead and mentor new or less-experienced auto technicians; provide on-the-job training.
  • Monitor work orders, schedule maintenance, and ensure fleet reliability and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain parts inventory and coordinate with vendors to procure parts for repair and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with other university departments to forecast and plan vehicle/equipment needs.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance related to DOT, EPA, and OSHA standards.
  • Assist with the development and recommendations regarding preventive maintenance programs and equipment replacement schedules.
  • Complete official State Vehicle Inspections and maintain current licenses for this function.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment as a team.
  • Adhere strictly to all University and departmental policies and procedures, reporting all safety concerns immediately to management.
  • Ability to deliver exceptional customer service using strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with all levels of University personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and guide less experienced team members.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and/or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced diagnostics and repair procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain within 12 months).
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University’s Automobile Insurance.
  • Current EPA refrigerant recovery license or certification (Automotive Certification only) required, or obtained within three months of employment.
  • Current NC Inspection certification required, or obtained within three months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record; must be insurable. CDL desirable.
  • Basic computer skills to include, but not limited to: the Internet, Mitchell on Demand, or other relevant software. Working knowledge of the Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Expert-level knowledge of automotive repair, diagnostics, and maintenance practices.
  • Proficiency in using and interpreting drivability and OBDII diagnostic tools.
  • Basic computer skills, including the use of the Internet, repair information software (e.g., Mitchell on Demand), and the ability to learn a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and keeping skills current in automotive technology and diagnostic equipment operation.
  • This position may be designated as essential personnel to support business continuity during campus emergencies, disasters, or other special needs as directed by management. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Associate degree or post-secondary technical training preferred.
  • ASE Master Technician certification or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL
  • Prior experience utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Experience in leadership or a lead technician role.
  • Experience in a university, municipal, or institutional fleet environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Heavy work. Talking, hearing, climbing, with prolonged stooping, kneeling, and standing. Walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, grasping. Close visual acuity.
  • Subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside. Subject to hazards.

Accountabilities:

  • May act in a supervisory capacity in the absence of the Fleet Services Manager.
  • Train and mentor new or less-experienced auto technicians on accepted University practices, including the proper use of Fleet Services equipment and diagnostic tools.
