LCIC Interpretive Coordinator

State of North Dakota

Summary of Work

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center highlights some of the area's most famous of countless travelers and residents who have lived along this special stretch of the Missouri River for hundreds of years. Each of our galleries tells the story of a different group. Nearby, visitors can step back in time at the reconstructed Fort Mandan, a full-sized replica of the fort where the Lewis & Clark Expedition overwintered in 1804-1805. Their time here was marked by the generosity of the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples and by enduring friendships with figures such as Sacagawea, Toussaint Charbonneau, and Sheheke-Shote.

The State Historical Society of North Dakota is seeking a creative and collaborative Interpretive Coordinator to help bring these stories - and many others - to life. In this role, you'll develop and lead engaging educational and interpretive programming for visitors of all ages, support a talented interpretive team, and help connect people to the diverse histories and cultures that have shaped this region.

Duties and Tasks

  • Coordinate tours and programs: Manage bookings and schedules for school and group visits, ensuring programs meet educational goals and create meaningful connections with history.
  • Create engaging experiences: Develop and deliver interpretive and educational programs, living history presentations, and special events.
  • Lead and mentor: Train and guide the lead interpreter, seasonal interpretive staff, and volunteers to maintain high-quality visitor experiences.
  • Collaborate and connect: Work closely with the agency's Education Outreach Coordinator and community partners to expand learning opportunities.
  • Promote and support: Assist with marketing programs, preparing reports, and managing the interpretive budget.
  • Contribute to daily operations: Support exhibit development, production, and installation, retail functions, and light site maintenance to ensure a welcoming environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in history, museum studies, natural or cultural resources, education, or a closely related field.
  • At least one year of work experience in interpretive programming or education.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer use.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public, and other support groups and volunteers.
  • Strong communication, organization, and customer service skills.
