Faculty Director of Opera Choruses and Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Music (Choral Conducting), Tenured or Tenure-track position

Position Summary

The Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position as Choral Conductor and Faculty Director of Opera Choruses; both senior and accomplished junior applicants will be considered. The successful candidate will be able to inspire student conductors and singers with a wide variety of skill sets in a highly active and professionally oriented educational environment.

Responsibilities: Rehearse and prepare opera choruses for as many as five productions annually with the internationally recognized IU Opera & Ballet Theater, including conducting in performance when required and preparing students cast in bit parts from the chorus. Teach private lessons for and mentor graduate choral conducting majors and train graduate opera chorus masters. Serve as choral department liaison for operatic creative and technical teams, including faculty and/or guest directors, choreographers, stage managers, etc. Serve as the choral department representative on the Opera Committee and the Opera Casting Committee if assigned.

Additional duties may include teaching one or more of the following courses: university choral ensembles (concert choirs); graduate and/or undergraduate choral conducting technique; choral rehearsal techniques; graduate seminars in choral literature; score reading; other courses in an area of expertise applicable to the candidate.

Participation in doctoral committees, school-wide committees, and in department service and recruitment activities is expected.

Basic Qualifications

The committee seeks conductors with high artistic standards, proficiency in languages and diction appropriate to the operatic repertory, sophisticated technical skills, and awareness of current research on matters of style, performance practice and musical sources. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep knowledge of choral literature and will be highly experienced in the preparation of opera choruses. Established national/international reputation as performer and/or teacher in the case of senior applicants, and a promising, emerging national reputation as a performer and/or teacher in the case of junior applicants. Terminal degree in music preferred; equivalent professional experience will be given equal consideration.

Additional Qualifications

Experience directing opera choruses in the professional world and proof of a broad and positive reputation in the opera community. Preferred candidates will also have significant experience in the performance of choral repertoire appropriate for the concert stage or worship space, including either large choral-orchestral works or a cappella chamber choir literature as appropriate in either/both sacred and secular genres.
