Job Summary:

Responsible for planning, organizing & directing the overall operation of the Pharmacy department, ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients. Manges & controls the purchase of inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals & related substances & supplies, participates in the department’s planning, revenue analysis, budgeting education & human resources activities.

The Manager works closely with the Director of Oncology & Pharmacy Services, the medical staff, the President & other Senior Leaders as needed, & other directors & department managers in meeting organization wide pharmacy needs. Has frequent contact with patients, nursing staff, physicians & Materials Management. External contacts are sales representatives & peers in other hospitals or healthcare facilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversight of all Pharmacy staff

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Establishes specifications for the procurement of all approved drugs & those chemicals & biologicals related to the practice of pharmacy.
  • Ensures the emergency drugs, as approved by the medical staff, are in adequate & proper supply within the designated areas.
  • Maintains records of the transactions of the pharmacy as required by federal, state & local laws as necessary to maintain adequate control & accountability of all drugs. This should include a system of controls & records for the requisitioning & dispensing of pharmaceutical supplies to nursing care units & to the other departments/services of the hospital.
  • Participates in the development & subsequent updating of a hospital formulary or drug list. The medical staff, through its pharmacy & therapeutics function, shall determine the hospital formulary to be used. The hospital formulary or drug list should be readily available to the professional staff who use it. The staff should be kept informed of any changes. The formulary or drug list should also include the availability of non-legend medications. The existence of a formulary does not preclude the use of unlisted drugs, & there should be a written policy & procedure for their procurement.
  • Communicates new product information to nursing services & other hospital personnel as required.
  • Performs an annual review of all pharmaceutical policies & procedures for the purpose of establishing their consistency with current practices within the hospital in collaboration with the Director of Oncology & Pharmacy Services.
  • Maintains means of identifying the signature of all practitioners authorized to use the pharmaceutical services for ambulatory care, patient prescriptions, as well as a listing of their drug enforcement administration numbers.
  • Is available for off-hour phone calls from nursing if problems arise.
  • Works with hospital administration on planning, organizing & managing pharmacy operations & ensuring compliance with all local, state & federal regulations.
  • Works closely with nursing & medical staff in addressing pharmaceutical service issues as they are related to the services provided to all patients.
  • Provides an environment that optimizes patient safety & reduces the likelihood of medical errors.
  • Procures narcotics as required.
  • Directs & participates in the development, implementation & communication of policies, guidelines & standards for the Pharmacy department in accordance with the hospital’s policies, JC & IDOH standards.
  • Familiar with proper storage, transport & disposal of drugs & pharmaceutical waste program.
  • Be the qualifying Pharmacist for the main campus – MMH.
  • Assist the Director of Oncology & Pharmacy Services in implementation & ongoing auditing of the 340B program.
  • Successfully develops & uses cost, quality & satisfaction measures as outcome criteria to make improvements. Uses appropriate, reliable & valid data as primary basis for making decisions, solving problems & evaluating processes & outcomes. Supports & participates in a team-approach to performance improvement.
  • Ensures the department is compliant with all regulatory & accreditation requirements, including federal, state (IDOH), local & the Joint Commission. Participates in hospital surveys that involve medication management.
  • Prepare annual operating & capital budgets. Responsible for monitoring the compliance to established budgets & any corrective action necessary to achieve compliance. Maintains department illness report. Performs bi-weekly payroll for department.
  • Collaboratively with Director of Oncology & Pharmacy Services, develops annual goals & objectives for the department that are consistent with the Hospital’s mission, goals & strategic business plan.
  • Responsible for directly supervising departments team members, to include hiring, training, disciplinary actions & terminations. Continuously evaluates performance of team members & completes annual written performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for development of strategies to improve the performance, effectiveness & morale of the department team members.
  • Participates in those aspects of the overall hospital quality improvement program that relates to drug utilization & effectiveness. This may include determining usage patterns for each drug according to clinical department/service or individual prescribers & assisting in the setting of drug-use criteria.
  • Fosters personal & professional development of self & team members. Provides opportunities for education & development of self & staff as part of work activities. Supports risk taking.
  • Ensures positive customer relations. As a manager & role model, ensures that team members understand the patient’s needs & provides courteous individualized attention to patients, visitors & fellow team members.
  • Continuously monitors department operating systems, policies, procedures & activities & revises as necessary.
  • Attends Leadership Team meetings. Responsible for the chain-of-communication, to communicate the appropriate information to the department team members in a manner that is supportive of the Hospital & administrative decisions. Conducts departmental meetings at least quarterly. Attends Leadership University sessions.
  • Attends & participates on appropriate hospital committees such as the IP & PT, Antibiotic Use, Leadership, DOB & Hospital Rounds as needed.
  • Builds & maintains an effective interpersonal & organizational network that enables communication of operation initiatives to management, team members & self. Demonstrated self-awareness. Listens & uses feedback in communication.
  • Help resolve site-specific problems when they arise.
  • Develop competitor awareness through communication, investigation & knowledge of competitors’ activities.
  • Willingness to respond, as a manager, to the needs of the Hospital beyond the ordinary work shift.
  • Provides communication to SLT, directors, managers, physicians, Board members, & staff as indicated.

  • Must be able to operate Laminar flow hood or newer models.
  • Utilizes pharmacy math skills for dose calculations.
  • Able to operate computer equipment & related software.
  • Able to use pharmacy dispensing devices & other new equipment as purchased.
  • Able to operate standard office equipment.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent majoring in Pharmacy is required. Pharm D is preferred.
  • Registered as a Pharmacist by the Indiana Board of Pharmacy.
  • Up to 3 months of experience in a hospital pharmacy is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Moderate physical effort required; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, lifting & reaching throughout the day.
  • Able to lift up to 30lbs for transport of supplies.
