What You'll Do

We need an experienced Machine Learning Engineer V with a background in enterprise software development to help drive the next stage of Avalara's agentic transformation.

On this team you will work with an experienced group dedicated to designing and implementing an agentic platform at massive scale. Your contributions will enable generative AI projects across Avalara, and have a direct impact on one of the most important projects in the company's history: the Avalara Avi Agent (AAA). The AAA is revolutionizing tax compliance for the industry by providing an agentic gateway that automate work at unprecedented rates - in concert with the enterprise partners where our customers work.

Your responsibilities as a Machine Learning Engineer V will span the entire development lifecycle, from conceptualization and prototyping to feature delivery and operationalization. You will report to the Director of AI/ML.

This is a fully US based remote opportunity

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

You are a software developer with a blend of technical skills in the fields of Agentic and Generative AI, including deep familiarity with MCP and A2A protocols. You work well with others and know how to ensure systems are scalable, performant, reliable, accurate, and available.

We are looking for people who think quickly, love to learn, and specialize in implementation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building the foundational framework for supporting LLM Applications at Avalara
  • Leveraging best practices in software development, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) with functional and unit testing in place.
  • Researching and applying the latest technologies and methodologies in machine learning and software development.
  • Writing, reviewing, and maintaining high-quality code to industry standards
  • Evaluating and continually improving agentic outcomes
  • Leading code review sessions to ensure good code quality
  • Documenting solutions to maintain a knowledge base and enable Avalara software agents
  • Mentoring junior engineers to encourage a culture of collaboration
  • Maintaining and enhancing, wherever possible, the platform's operational robustness

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Minimum of 8 years work experience building and deploying software in production, with a preference for Python
  • Knowledge of and experience with LLMs like GPT, Claude, or LLaMa
  • Experience building agentic systems and workflows, preferably at enterprise scales
  • Proficiency working in cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, GCP),
  • Ongoing exposure to technological innovations in AI & ML (esp. GenAI).
  • Expertise in design patterns, data structures, distributed systems, and experience with cloud technologies.
  • Deep experience with and interest in supporting and maintaining mature high availability systems at scale
  • Bachelor's degree with computer science exposure

Pay Range Details

The base pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be different in other locations.

Colorado $185,800-$306,600 (annually)

Washington $185,800-$338,800 (annually)

California $185,800-$371,100 (annually)

NYC $205,400-$371,100 (annually)

The pay range above is the general base pay range for you in the state listed. Your actual salary/wage may be based on several factors, such as geographic location, candidate experience and qualifications, market and business considerations. This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on company performance, depending on the terms of the applicable plan and your role.
