Position Summary
Summary
The executive vice chancellor for academic affairs (EVCAA) serves as the chief academic officer of IU Northwest. The EVCAA reports directly to the chancellor and serves in his absence as the institution’s senior administrative officer. The EVCAA is responsible for the management, quality, development, coordination, evaluation, and promotion of all academic programs and courses on or off the IU Northwest campus. The EVCAA oversees all faculty matters and has overall responsibility for program review, accreditation, and regular assessment of academic achievement, retention, persistence, and institutional effectiveness for the purpose of program improvement. This senior-level administrator recommends allocation of resources to the academic units and support departments and provides supervisory oversight of their budgets. Additionally, the EVCAA oversees the development and utilization of learning resources, including the library, teaching and learning centers, and online education; develops programs to improve the quality of teaching and learning; encourages and supports faculty research, scholarship, and creative work; and promotes the cultural and intellectual growth of the academic community. The executive vice chancellor convenes the deans and academic leadership and serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Executive Leadership Group.
In concert with Chancellor Arrick Jackson and members of the chancellor’s cabinet, the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs will provide leadership in several critical areas including, but not limited to, the following:
Provide strategic vision for the future of education at IU Northwest
IU Northwest is the most demographically varied campus in the IU system and a federally designated Minority Serving and Hispanic Serving Institution. The EVCAA will provide leadership that leverages this distinctive identity, guiding the university through changes in higher education while responding to regional workforce needs and preparing for future challenges.
Advance IU Northwest’s distinctive academic identity
The campus offers high-quality programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Human Services, College of Professional Studies, Schools of Business and Economics, Education, the Arts, and Public and Environmental Affairs, as well as the IU School of Medicine–Northwest. The EVCAA will safeguard and strengthen this identity, promoting innovative curriculum design, experiential learning, online education, and faculty-student engagement that connects academic excellence to community needs.
Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive university community
IU Northwest believes in and promotes an environment where all members of the learning community are – and feel – respected, and have access to the same resources, allowing them to reach their full academic and professional potential. The EVCAA will support faculty recruitment and retention strategies that enhance engagement, work collaboratively across units to advance excellence, and foster a climate of respect, and open dialogue.
Champion student success
As a student-centered institution, IU Northwest prioritizes student persistence, retention, and degree completion. The EVCAA will lead and expand initiatives that address achievement gaps, support academic advising, integrate experiential learning, and enhance student wellness and success across populations, including adult learners and first-generation students.
Identify opportunities to increase enrollment in a changing environment
IU Northwest has recently achieved notable enrollment growth while serving a variety of student populations in Indiana. The EVCAA will collaborate with enrollment management and student affairs to strengthen recruitment, promote academic innovation, and highlight IUN’s role as the region’s top university — combining the strengths of a large research institution with the personalized attention of a regional campus.
Recruit, retain, and develop an exceptional faculty, administration, and staff
As chief academic officer, the EVCAA must maintain a commitment to supporting high-performing faculty, administration, and staff. This includes fostering a strong teacher-scholar culture, expanding professional development and mentorship, supporting tenure and promotion success, and encouraging faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity.
