Position Summary:

Springboard to Learning programs use the arts to reinforce curricular topics, introduce new concepts, and expose area students to various artistic disciplines. Professional artists are selected for the roster on the basis of artistic merit, educational effectiveness, and the ability to communicate with young people. Essential Functions:

  • Conduct 8-14 week residencies, one day a week per school assignment
  • Develop programs, curriculum, and lesson plans or; be trained in the curriculum of one of Springboard’s pre-existing Signature Programs
  • Work in classrooms of up to 30 students to explore topics in greater depth through several sequential, workshop-style sessions
  • Plans projects and customizes curriculum in collaboration with teachers; length and number of sessions with students and other details vary by teacher and theme
  • Examples of program themes include:
  • African percussion
  • Improv theatre techniques
  • Creating art using fractions and ratios
  • Song writing
  • Various genres of dance
  • Puppetry and storytelling
  • Cultures of the World
  • Connect an art or humanity with at least one tested subject area, including English Language Arts, Math, Science, or Social Studies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Writing and/or adapting curriculum
  • Effective demonstration of a visual or performing art
  • Execution of classroom pedagogy
  • Collaborates with other educators

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a visual or performing art
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience educating children, either professionally or as a volunteer

Education:

  • Minimum of 60 semester hours of credit from a regionally accredited, academic degree-granting, college or university
  • Teaching Artist has substitute teacher certification or career certification with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
  • Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree

Working Conditions and Environment:

  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Very limited or no exposure to physical risk
