Description

The zulily Member Engagement Platform team is looking for an outstanding hands-on Software Engineering Manager to lead a small team of talented platform (back-end, distributed system) engineers to create our content platform. Our Member Engagement Platform is comprised of the tools and services that allow us to communicate to our customers via Email, SMS, Push notifications and Facebook Messenger

 

We work in small, independent and agile teams, and collaborate with product managers to implement projects quickly.  We are looking for a smart engineering leader that can have an immediate impact and will grow their team, provide technical vision and leadership, and work cross-functionally to a deliver world-class ecommerce experience. You will be responsible for hiring and developing a small, high-performing team of software engineers in a highly collaborative culture that is built on innovation. You will lead and manage all aspects of the SDLC from strategy through implementation and measurement. 

 

The successful candidate will have influence over the vision, features, and design of the critical data used to drive the user experience and effectively capture and record order data.  You will own all phases of development lifecycle from solidifying business requirements, design and modeling, development, deployment, and support.

 

What you will own and be responsible for:

  • Building the next generation high throughput services for core Member Engagement Platform

  • Work closely with product managers to ensure all features are correctly implemented

  • Collaborate with other teams cross Zulily, and strongly advocate engineering best practices and standardized solutions

  • Help realize our technical vision and ensure we hit all milestones

  • Work in agile development environment with short sprints

  • Actively participate in code reviews and help your team write better code

  • Build global, internationalized solutions


Qualifications

  • Excellent coding skills and strong grasp of Object Oriented Programming (Java/C#, C++, Python etc.) 

  • Experience building internal and external APIs and RESTful web services

  • Expertise with web servers (i.e. Apache, Nginx, Jetty etc)

  • Strong professional background working with relational databases such as MySQL, Postgres or Oracle

  • Proven ability to find creative solutions, juggle multiple concurrent projects, release rapidly and ship elegant, customer-centric applications

  • Obsessive about quality, good design and elegant code

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related technical field

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with non-relational data stores (Redis, Cassandra or Mongo)

  • Familiarly with cloud computing platform such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud or Azure

  • Familiarity with Docker containers

  • Side projects (Android or iOS application, personal website etc.) or open source project contributions

  • Advance degree in Computer Science or related field 

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • 8+ years of experience developing software within fast paced environments

  • 3+ years of direct people management 

  • Have worked across different levels of the technology stack

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • History working on Agile teams, and love the process of continuous  improvement

  • Thrives working in a fast-paced, evolving, growing and dynamic environment
  • Ability to lead influence others and find creative solutions and move quickly to deliver them
  • Strong desire to collaborate with team members throughout the process and consult with other project teams on the design and use of enterprise data
  • Exceptional analytical skills with a data driven approach and ability to measure impact of project
  • Takes ownership and bias for action
  • Have a strong desire to play with and learn new technologies
