Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. This position involves drawing blood, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontaminating, and updating patient information.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
  • Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
  • Decontaminate and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Understand all physicians' orders completely.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Ensure 100% accuracy in checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
  • Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
  • Follow procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer phone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • A least 2 years of recent phlebotomy, blood draw or venipuncture experience
  • Must have specimen collection and processing experience
  • Excellent customer service
  • Experience with pediatric and geriatric drawings

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Additional Skills & QualificationsPhlebotomy certification (CPT)
  • High school diploma or GED

Work Environment

This position is based in Orangeburg, operating during 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. The location is large and busy, accommodating all patients. Training will take place in Aiken, SC, and the role involves processing collections.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $18.50/hr.
