Duties/Responsibilities

Provide 1-on-1 English tutoring for Korean visiting scholars

  • Meet with Korean visiting scholars one or two hours per week for tutoring
  • Help them improve their knowledge of vocabulary, understanding of grammar, pronunciation, and ability to participate in conversation
  • Assess their English proficiency at the beginning and end of the tutoring period, and provide formative assessments throughout

Support IEP instructors in the classroom

  • Support instructors in class and teach parts of or entire lessons each week (under IEP instructor mentorship)
  • Participate in lesson planning and preparation
  • Assist with administering and grading quizzes and exams

  • Facilitate conversational activities to get students to talk
  • Work 1-on-1 with student

  • Support the IEP Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, and Program Assistant in planning and organizing fun and engaging social events and activities for IEP students·

  • Conduct research on what activities and events students would like the IEP to offer

Minimum Qualifications

Position Summary

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of Georgia is looking for a highly motivated, flexible, and dependable teaching assistant for the 2025/2026 academic year. The candidate will work with incoming Korean visiting scholars to provide 1-on-1 English tutoring, support our instructors and students in the classroom, actively participate in planning and implementing instruction and assessment, and collaborate with our IEP Program Assistant in creating opportunities for students to use their English outside of the classroom.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Preference will be given to applicant who

  • Have a TESOL or World Language Education background or currently pursue a degree or certification in TESOL or World Language Education
  • Have experience with teaching adult learners
  • Have proficiency in Korean

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Currently be an undergraduate or graduate student in Language and Literacy Education, World Language Education, English, Linguistics, or a related field
  • Be a native speaker of English
  • Have a minimum 3.5 overall GPA
  • Display a genuine interest in the mission of the IEP and the learning progress of our students
  • Have experience with providing English tutoring to speakers of English as a foreign language
  • Have excellent communication skills and a patient approach to teaching second language learners
