ERM is seeking an outstanding professional to join our Smithers, BC, Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, or Yellowknife, NT office as a Managing Technical Consultant, Terrestrial Ecology to support our Mining and Energy teams.

As a member of the ecosystem team, you will act as a terrestrial ecologist in western Canada, with capacity to conduct work in other jurisdictions across Canada, and as a manager and mentor of the teams’ junior colleagues. Technical work will include developing proposals, planning and review of terrestrial ecosystem and soil mapping projects in support of baseline data collection, developing effect assessments for vegetation, ecosystems, and soil valued components, wetland classification, delineation and management, limited field site investigations related to vegetation and ecosystems, and mitigation planning for ERM projects in the mining and energy sectors. The successful applicant will have experience with environmental effects assessments and offset/compensation planning as it relates to implementation of federal and provincial policies. Furthermore, the successful candidate will act as a leader within the ecosystem team and provide direct oversight to junior colleagues. More broadly, the applicant must show an interest in applying knowledge and skills to help our clients solve complex challenges in these sectors. This role has tremendous potential for career growth with the successful candidate having opportunities to directly interact with clients and regulators and participate in business development. The successful candidate will be a member of a large multidisciplinary biodiversity team in Canada and will become a member of an extensive team of global environmental and social experts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and direct terrestrial ecology and soil science field programs primarily in BC, Alberta and Northern Canada.
  • Preparation of environmental effect assessments for and associated management plans in compliance with applicable federal, provincial/territorial requirements.
  • Develop various environmental permitting applications for projects in the mining, energy, and infrastructure development sectors.
  • Perform project delivery activities such as survey field work, data collection, literature review, technical report writing, and developing recommendations for clients.
  • Prepare proposals, including development of scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads.
  • Work on multiple projects within client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agents, land owners, Indigenous communities, and clients during field activities.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.Sc. degree in Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field. M.Sc. preferred.
  • Designation as a Qualified Professional in Alberta and/or BC, or immediate eligibility.
  • 5+ years of environmental consulting experience; prior experience in government, mining or energy sectors, or First Nation consultation are considered assets.
  • Environmental Assessment and associated permitting experience in BC/Alberta/Northern Canada.
  • Expertise with Federal, Provincial and Territorial regulations and guidelines pertaining to survey methodologies, environmental assessment, and mitigation planning.
  • Strong upland and wetland plant identification.
  • Detailed understanding of rare plant and invasive plant species survey methodologies following provincial standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Detailed understanding of terrestrial ecosystem mapping under relevant provincial systems (e.g., biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification).
  • Detailed understanding of soil surveys and mapping under relevant provincial systems.
  • Experience completing terrestrial ecosystem mapping projects in BC according to provincial standards, guidelines and procedures is considered an asset.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
  • Ability to follow directions and take initiative when required.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment.
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

For the Managing Technical Consultant, Terrestrial Ecology position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $93,309 – $103,831 (CAD). An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where employee’s fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are NOT bonus eligible).
