Position Description
Position Title: Van Driver/Bus Driver Candidate
Reports To: Transportation Services – Transportation Director and Transportation Coordinator
Supervises: No One
Salary: CDL Holders Pay Grade 90; Class C Drivers License Pay Grade 91
Status: 90 Days leading to Permanent, 10 months, Classified, as a bus driver; Nonexempt
A Van Driver operates a 7-passenger minivan on assigned routes and schedules to provide safe and efficient transportation for students. Work includes pre- and post-trip inspections, safe vehicle operation, following all traffic and school bus laws, maintaining discipline, completing reports, and securing the van after use. Drivers must maintain positive relationships with parents, guardians, and school staff. Reports to the Transportation Director and Transportation Coordinator in accordance with DMV regulations and the NC School Bus Driver Handbook.
Must possess and maintain at least a valid Class C License for five-years. Must possess a good driving record, and pass a criminal record check. Graduation from high school and some experience driving a van with one-year related experience in transporting or assisting with monitoring students or adults; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Must pass FMCSA Commercial Driver Medical Certification.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time while operating a motor vehicle. Have the ability to enter and exit the vehicle multiple times per day. Must be able to bend, kneel, or stoop as needed to assist passengers. Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting with student equipment, mobility devices, or other items).Must be able to assist students with special needs, including securing wheelchairs, seatbelts, and other safety restraints. Ability to use hands and arms for frequent steering, shifting, and operating vehicle controls. Adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) and hearing (with or without aids) to safely operate a motor vehicle and communicate with students and staff. Must be physically and mentally able to respond quickly in emergency situations.
