Position Description

Position Title: Van Driver/Bus Driver Candidate

Reports To: Transportation Services – Transportation Director and Transportation Coordinator

Supervises: No One

Salary: CDL Holders Pay Grade 90; Class C Drivers License Pay Grade 91

Status: 90 Days leading to Permanent, 10 months, Classified, as a bus driver; Nonexempt

Summary

A Van Driver operates a 7-passenger minivan on assigned routes and schedules to provide safe and efficient transportation for students. Work includes pre- and post-trip inspections, safe vehicle operation, following all traffic and school bus laws, maintaining discipline, completing reports, and securing the van after use. Drivers must maintain positive relationships with parents, guardians, and school staff. Reports to the Transportation Director and Transportation Coordinator in accordance with DMV regulations and the NC School Bus Driver Handbook.

Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Drive van on assigned routes without deviation unless authorized.
  2. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring no students remain on the van.
  3. Comply with vehicle inspection programs for safety.
  4. Work with supervisor and school staff to resolve discipline issues.
  5. Obey all traffic laws and school bus regulations.
  6. Follow all safety regulations, including emergency evacuations.
  7. Clean van regularly to maintain a professional environment.
  8. Practice defensive driving and follow traffic regulations.
  9. Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  10. Transport only authorized students.
  11. Report delays, accidents, or citations immediately (no later than the next business day).
  12. Report maintenance issues per procedures.
  13. Drive routes during assigned work hours, including additional routes as requested.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned during work hours.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Requirements

Must possess and maintain at least a valid Class C License for five-years. Must possess a good driving record, and pass a criminal record check. Graduation from high school and some experience driving a van with one-year related experience in transporting or assisting with monitoring students or adults; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Must pass FMCSA Commercial Driver Medical Certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
  2. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  3. Ability to present information in small group or one-on-one settings.
  4. Ability to use electronic devices.
  5. Ability to apply basic math for distance and measurement.
  6. Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions.
  7. Ability to resolve problems involving limited variables.
  8. Flexibility to work varied hours when requested.
  9. Must hold NC Driver’s License and pass FMCSA Commercial Driver Medical Certification.
  10. For continued employment beyond 90 days, must hold NC CDL with School Bus & Passenger Endorsements, plus School Bus Pocket Card Certification.
  11. No DWI convictions within the past 10 years.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time while operating a motor vehicle. Have the ability to enter and exit the vehicle multiple times per day. Must be able to bend, kneel, or stoop as needed to assist passengers. Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting with student equipment, mobility devices, or other items).Must be able to assist students with special needs, including securing wheelchairs, seatbelts, and other safety restraints. Ability to use hands and arms for frequent steering, shifting, and operating vehicle controls. Adequate vision (with or without corrective lenses) and hearing (with or without aids) to safely operate a motor vehicle and communicate with students and staff. Must be physically and mentally able to respond quickly in emergency situations.
