Position Summary

The Director, Associate General Counsel – Labor and Employment, is responsible for architecting Empower’s labor and employment legal backbone. This role transforms compliance into a strategic advantage, embedding resilience and foresight into the company’s DNA. The Director provides enterprise-wide counsel on labor and employment law, ensuring the organization scales safely under regulatory, operational, and workforce pressures. By leveraging artificial intelligence, this leader builds predictive compliance systems, automates dispute resolution, and drives workforce analytics that empower leaders to make data-driven decisions. Acting as a trusted advisor to the CEO, COO, and CHRO, the Director develops scalable policies, mitigates litigation risk, and designs a legal operating system built for three times Empower’s current size. Success is defined not only by reduced risk but by enabling hypergrowth, safeguarding patient safety, and aligning people with purpose. This is a transformative leadership role at the intersection of law, AI, and business growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

Enterprise Legal Strategy

  • Architect a scalable labor and employment operating system built for rapid expansion.
  • Align legal frameworks with business priorities, compliance standards, and growth goals.
  • Advise senior executives on reorganizations, contracts, and workforce strategies.

Litigation and Risk Management

  • Direct litigation strategies, ensuring cost discipline and mission alignment.
  • Reduce systemic risks through proactive programs addressing wage-hour and workforce disputes.
  • Serve as Empower’s representative in regulator interactions, strengthening external trust.

AI-Enabled Compliance and Analytics

  • Deploy predictive AI models to forecast litigation and identify risk hotspots.
  • Automate compliance monitoring across jurisdictions with AI-integrated systems.
  • Use AI-driven analytics to connect workforce trends with legal strategies.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit elite talent from AmLaw 50 firms, Fortune 100, or healthcare enterprises.
  • Build a high-performance team culture rooted in accountability and urgency.
  • Create development pathways that transform legal professionals into business leaders.

Systems and Transformation

  • Design and install scalable processes, policies, and procedures from the ground up.
  • Define clear departmental goals, metrics, and execution plans.
  • Continuously adapt systems to anticipate and withstand regulatory scrutiny.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Expertise in labor and employment law with demonstrated ability to design scalable, compliant frameworks for high-growth enterprises.
  • Strong command of AI-enabled legal technologies, including predictive analytics, automated compliance platforms, and workforce analytics.
  • Proven success in executive advising, litigation strategy, and dispute resolution in complex, regulated environments.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with ability to build, mentor, and scale high-performing legal teams in mission-driven organizations.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Minimum 10+ years of labor and employment law experience in-house or with AmLaw 50 firm.
  • Demonstrated success scaling legal systems in high-growth, multi-jurisdictional environments.
  • Experience integrating AI and technology into legal operations strongly preferred.
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing with applicable state bar.
