About this opportunity:
At Ericsson Research, we are at the forefront of delivering groundbreaking communication technologies. This Master Thesis project offers two MSc students the chance to help shape the next generation of microwave and sub-THz radios by evaluating an optical oscillator in an industrial radio testbed. The roles are divided into two specialized tracks: Optical and RF-Microwave. If you join us, you will work in close collaboration with each other and our Radio Link hardware product development team, combining expertise to create a state-of-the-art low phase noise microwave source.
We ask all applicants to state clearly in their application which track they wish to apply for:
Optical track:
- Design and simulate photonics-based 50 GHz RF generation.
- Integrate bench-top lasers, microcomb resonators, and photodiodes on a breadboard with coaxial interface to RF circuits.
RF track:
- Design the RF-divider circuitry, including low-noise drive amplifiers, filters, and a 1/N divider (e.g., N=4).
- Implement your design on a printed circuit board (PCB) ready for integration with the optical source.
Shared objectives:
- Integrate the optical and RF subsystems.
- Perform measurements using a phase noise analyzer.
- Evaluate performance in a radio testbed where the conventional RF source is replaced.
- Document and present the results in a Master Thesis report.
The skills you bring:
- MSc studies in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar.
- Optical applicants: experience in photonics/optical systems.
- RF applicants: experience in RF/microwave circuit design.
- Knowledge of electromagnetic simulation tools (HFSS, ADS) is a merit.
- Good English communication skills.
- Curious, solution-oriented, collaborative mindset.
