Position Purpose

Assists with installation, repairs, or replacement of commercial kitchen appliances throughout Child Nutrition Services (CNS) including campus kitchens. Works under direct supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Child Nutrition Services – Installation, Maintenance & Repair

  • Performs minor service, preventative maintenance, and repairs on a variety of commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Assists Appliance Repair Technicians with major service, repairs, removal, and installation of a variety of commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Checks for gas leaks when servicing gas appliances; notifies Technician if issues are found.
  • Maintains related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintains log of tasks performed and writes reports as required.
  • Responds to emergency calls as needed, while under direct supervision, including after-hours and/or weekends.

Safety

  • Maintains inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials. Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices, standard methods, materials, and tools used in the repair of commercial kitchen appliances, equipment, and tools.
  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes.
  • Skill in estimating and calculating amount of materials needed, and tracking inventory.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, service manuals, wiring diagram schematics, and other written material relating to installation and repairs.
  • Ability to write and prepare work descriptions, notes, instructions, and basic reports.
  • Ability to find and correct defects in electrical commercial kitchen appliances; ability to read electrical wiring diagrams to repair or maintain appliances.
  • Ability to use software to for basic computing and communicating.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals such as hand-held devices; small hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments; dollies and hand trucks; light truck or van.
  • Posture: Frequent standing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, high degree of physical dexterity and ability to perform work requiring considerable standing and bending; frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
  • Lifting: Daily heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over).
  • Exerting: Occasional heavy pushing/pulling and exerting to move over 100 pounds of distributed weight, often with hand trucks and/or the assistance of other employees.
  • Environment: Works outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; works around machinery with moving parts; may work alone; regularly works irregular hours; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours on short notice; occasional unscheduled overtime to protect District property due to power outage, equipment malfunction, or as needed.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
  • Special Requirements: Responds to emergency work requests; works overtime as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
    • Specialized training from a Fort Worth ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, accredited college, technical, or trade school preferred.
  • Certification/License:
    • None.
  • Experience:
    • 1 year of general trade, maintenance, construction, mechanical, appliance repair, or installation experience

  • Successful completion of an approved Fort Worth ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, including, but not limited to:
    • Welding
    • Robotics and Automation
    • Electrical Technology
    • Construction Technology
    • Aviation Maintenance
    • Automotive Technology
    • Automotive Collision Repair
