This is a unique opportunity to leverage your deep expertise in backend engineering to lead technical innovation in the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency and new trading products, driving our technological evolution.

As a Principal Backend Engineer specializing in Crypto and Alternative Trading Products at Questrade, you will be a technical leader shaping the future of our digital asset and alternatives offerings. You'll take ownership of the backend architecture for our retail crypto and alternatives trading platforms, guide the expansion of our crypto capabilities, and lead the launch of new alternative trading products.

Platform Architecture & Development: Architect, design, and lead the development of robust, scalable, and secure backend services for Questrade's retail crypto and alternatives trading platforms, establishing best practices and technical standards.

Technical Leadership: Drive the technical strategy for expanding crypto infrastructure across various Questrade products, ensuring seamless integration, high performance, and future scalability.

New Product Launches: Lead the backend development and launch of new crypto capabilities for clients and internal teams, from architectural design to deployment, with a focus on technical excellence and quality.

Growth Portfolio Innovation: Lead the architecture, build, and delivery of other new alternative trading products within the dedicated Growth Portfolio entity, actively identifying, vetting, and adopting emerging technologies.

Operational Excellence: Provide expert-level support for all crypto trading and transfer solutions, mentoring the team on troubleshooting complex issues and ensuring system stability and reliability.

API Architecture: Architect and design clear, efficient, and secure APIs (including RESTful and WebSocket APIs), setting the standards for integration and developer experience across the organization.

Team Leadership & Mentorship: Lead and mentor a team of backend engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and adoption of innovative development practices. Set the technical standards for the team.

Efficiency & Automation: Champion initiatives to automate workflows, optimize system performance, and enhance development pipelines to boost team efficiency and accelerate delivery cycles.

Complex Problem Solving: Own the diagnosis and resolution of the most complex technical issues, ensuring high availability and optimal performance of crypto and trading systems.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Act as a key technical liaison, working closely with product owners, frontend architects, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into cutting-edge, scalable technical solutions.

Research & Innovation: Actively research, prototype, and champion the adoption of new trends and technologies in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space to maintain our competitive edge.

So are YOU our next Principal Backend Engineer? You are if you have…

• Expertise in Java and Spring Boot is desired.
• Proven experience integrating common crypto platform vendors (hot wallets, custodians, execution management service, payment processors).
• Deep experience in the financial services or FinTech industry.
• Expert knowledge of security best practices in blockchain and financial applications.
• Demonstrated experience leading the launch of new products from 0 to 1.
• Experience with frontend technologies (e.g., Angular, React Native) is a bonus.
• Experience: 3-5+ years of experience in backend software development, with a proven track record of architecting and building large-scale, resilient systems.
• Technical Proficiency:
• Expertise in one or more modern backend programming languages (e.g., C#, Java, Go, Python, Node.js).
• Proven experience architecting and building scalable RESTful and WebSocket APIs.
• Deep understanding and application of object-oriented programming (OOP), SOLID principles, and other software design patterns.
• Extensive experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, and optimizing applications for large datasets.
• Mastery of event-driven architecture and message queues (e.g., PubSub, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Working experience with cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, Azure, AWS) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience leading testing strategies and implementing robust unit, integration, and performance testing practices.
• System Design: Proven ability to architect complex, high-availability distributed systems with a focus on performance, security, and maintainability.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a talent for resolving ambiguous and complex technical challenges.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical strategy to technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership.
• Collaboration & Leadership: A strong leader and team player who excels in a collaborative environment and has a passion for mentoring and elevating the skills of the team.
• Initiative: A self-starter with a strategic mindset and a relentless drive to deliver high-quality solutions and push technological boundaries.
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. A Master's degree is a plus.
