WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The Department of Public Safety (DPS), Division of Statewide Services is looking to recruit for a Microcomputer/Network Specialist 1/2. This position provides system and network administration and support on the DPS Networking Team to support department IT Systems. It will work closely with the DPS Application and Support teams as well as the State of Alaska Office of Information Technology (OIT) to manage shared enterprise infrastructure.
The Networking Team plays an integral role in DPS by providing tier 3 network and system support and collaboratively working with DPS and OIT IT teams, vendor partners, and stakeholders to execute projects for critical law enforcement enterprise applications.
The successful applicant will have thorough knowledge of information technology architecture, networking, and related technical subjects, be innovative, and be able to execute key responsibilities through independent initiative and skill.

This position will work under the supervision of the Data Processing Manager I (DPS Networking Lead) but should require little supervision for day-to-day tasking. All DPS Information Services employees are expected to provide occasional after-hours support as required. Other duties may be assigned.
OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE:
The Division of Statewide Services provides technical and specialized services to the other divisions of the Department of Public Safety, local, State and Federal Law enforcement, and the public at large. The Division consists of the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau, Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory, Alaska Public Safety Communication Services, and Information Services.
Information Services develops and maintains all computerized resources for the Department of Public Safety's information systems and provides support for over 5,000 users statewide at over 70 locations. Supported networks and infrastructure range geographically across the entirety of the State and include the management of firewalls, routers, switches, servers, specialty equipment supporting law enforcement operations, and network interfaces to dozens of partner law enforcement agencies and federal authorities.
Some of the mission critical enterprise and law enforcement systems this infrastructure supports includes: the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN), Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), Alaska Record Management System (ARMS), Traffic and Criminal System (TraCS), Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), along with dozens of custom applications and interfaces.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level 1, promotion to level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
BACKGROUND CHECK
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
