Overview

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Crawford Lab within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The Crawford Lab at Rutgers University-New Brunswick focuses on understanding the interplay between environmental exposures and host-pathogen interactions, with a particular emphasis on gut health. Our research investigates how intranasal exposure to environmental agents, such as dust collected from concentrated animal feeding operations, influences intestinal inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and the gut microbiome.

Our lab aims to foster a collaborative and joyful lab environment that will support people interested in doing fun science, learning new skills/concepts, and advancing your professional goals. The work performed by the successful candidate will be foundational to all lab projects and will result in co-authorship on high impact publications.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Manages mouse colony, assist with genotyping, assist with IACUC compliance.
  • Works efficiently and collaboratively to assist experiments, including mouse tissue collection, tissue dissections, cell isolations, cell culture, sequencing, electrophoresis, PCR/qPCR.
  • Assists in ordering, shipping, receiving, and organization of lab reagents/supplies; assist in maintenance of laboratory space, ensure laboratory safety is aligned with internal and external regulations.
  • Assists new members on-boarding and train personnel for rodent handling and core lab techniques:
    • Western blotting
    • Protein Assays
    • PCR/qPCR
    • H&E, IHC,
    • Cell culture
    • Tissue dissections
    • Stool collection
    • Genotyping
  • Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal skills, and computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel and Power Point is required.
  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • Prior experience in the following: rodent handling and biomedical laboratory techniques.
  • Undergraduate, or graduate student’s basic laboratory technique is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Having a strong skill in recording financial transaction aptitude is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic.

Equipment Utilized

  • General laboratory equipment – thermocyclers, centrifuges, pH meters, balances, western blot, PCR/qPCR equipment.
  • Microsoft Office – Word, PowerPoint, Excel.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds

Special Conditions

  • The selected candidate must be able to maintain biosecurity and collect samples at various locations across Rutgers.
  • Regular work week may include evening and/or weekend work.
