The Center for the Arts (CFA) at the University at Buffalo within the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking a Stage Operations Technician. This hands-on position offers variety, creativity, and opportunities for professional growth while supporting a wide range of performances and events in our theatre spaces.

The Stage Operations Technician plays a key role by leading stage crews during load-ins, rehearsals, and performances; managing rigging and fly operations; and ensuring safe, efficient, and organized venues. In collaboration with the Technical Director and production team, responsibilities include operating and maintaining the fly system and overseeing rigging inspections and stage maintenance.

Beyond supporting show operations, this role provides opportunities to mentor students and participate in creative, problem-solving projects.

The CFA is committed to professional development and provides training and financial support toward ETCP Rigger certification and other industry-recognized safety credentials

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead stage crews during load-ins, rehearsals, and performances
  • Oversee rigging and staging operations ensuring venue and equipment safety in accordance with university and industry standards
  • Operate fly rail systems
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, repairs, and installations of stage and rigging equipment
  • Support scenery, carpentry, and construction tasks during show setup and implementation, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in technical theater or a related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in stagehand work, rigging, technical theater, or as a stage/head carpenter for live events.
  • Basic rigging, fly rail operation, or head carpentry skills, with a strong emphasis on safety
  • Solid understanding of technical theater, touring productions, and current industry safety standards
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams and maintain a safe work environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and high-quality service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theater or a related field.
  • Experience leading professional and student crews in a multi-venue or academic setting
  • Knowledge of fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures, and operation of mobile elevated work platforms
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., Vectorworks) for rigging and production planning
  • Advanced safety certifications (e.g., OSHA-30, ETCP Rigger – Theater) preferred but not required
  • Carpentry, scenic construction, or welding experience is a plus
  • Experience training junior staff or students

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move 50 pounds, work at heights (including truss walking, weight loading, and up-rigging), and operate mobile elevated work platforms safely.
  • Flexible schedule, including availability for nights, weekends, and long production shifts.
