Posting Summary

Rutgers School of Public Health is seeking an Epidemiologist (Vaccine Preventable Disease Program) located in Trenton, NJ. Under direction, the Epidemiologist will work with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) Communicable Disease Service (CDS), Vaccine Preventable Disease Program, to conduct surveillance and investigation of communicable diseases and provide epidemiologic support to local health departments (LHDs), health care facilities and other public health partners throughout New Jersey.

Duties include:

  • Participates in communicable disease surveillance activities including, but not limited to:
    • Reviews statewide surveillance systems (e.g. Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System {CDRSS}) to identify trends and/or issues needing additional investigation.
    • Collects, tabulates, and interprets data through data management or statistical analysis software, as required.
    • Monitors reported health conditions, the quality and timeliness, and conducts analysis of trends and issues, as required.
    • Provides consultation on communicable disease surveillance to public health partners, such as local health departments, health care facilities, and laboratories.
  • Participates in epidemiologic investigations.
    • Provides assistance and consultation to public health partners such as local health departments and health care facilities, on disease case and outbreak investigations.
    • Monitors and improves surveillance and reporting for health conditions as directed by the CDS,
    • Vaccine Preventable Disease Program, in the New Jersey Department of Health.
    • Assists in the education of public health agencies, health care providers, and the general public about reporting and investigations.
    • Attends regional and other stakeholder meetings as needed, developing collaborative relationships with public health partners.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or related field (a concentration in Epidemiology preferred) plus two (2) years of experience in health, applied epidemiology.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and experience being a team player.
  • Proficiency in data management and statistical analysis programs (e.g., SAS, Excel, Access).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for transportation is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with communicable disease investigations or prevention preferred.
