Position Information
Materials and Tests Division's Structural Materials (STR) Section is looking for an Engineering Assistant (EA) I, II, or III who has excellent problem solving skills, is eager to learn, and will enjoy working with a group of talented professionals to ensure quality on Texas roadways. The EA will work alongside a team of professionals to provide direct engineering support to STR's field inspection personnel located throughout the State of Texas in the areas of precast prestressed concrete, structural steel, and non-bridge steel. The work also entails supporting TxDOT's 25 districts by ensuring the quality of structural prefabricated materials furnished to construction and maintenance projects statewide comply with specifications, and working alongside an experienced quality assurance team to assess the operations of precast concrete and steel fabrication plants. The EA will also have the opportunity to enhance STR's quality assurance programs, TxDOT specifications, and represent STR at meetings, technical conferences, etc. STR believes in investing in EAs by providing cross training opportunities in the areas of fabrication and inspection of precast prestressed concrete bridge members, structural steel bridge girders; signing, lighting, and signal support structures, and other related materials. Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and/or transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Performs assignments related to the construction of prefabricated structural materials and reviews product quality and fabrication processes at outdoor fabrication plants. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
NOTE: All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Engineer Assistant I: No work experience is required. No supervisory experience required.
Engineer Assistant II: 1 year of Engineering related experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). No supervisory experience required.
Engineer Assistant III: 2 years of Engineering related experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). No supervisory experience required. Passing Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience for gaining PE licensure may substitute for two (2) years of engineering related work experience.
