Department Summary:

The Systems Engineering Innovation Center is seeking a Department Chief Engineer (CE) to join the leadership team of the Systems Security Engineering Department (L1A6). The CE is responsible for the Department’s technical strategy and quality in work across systems security engineering, loss driven systems engineering, cybersecurity operations, mission assurance, security analysis, and cyber ontology capability areas. The candidate needs to have strong servant leadership and team leadership skills. The successful candidate will be a key part of department and division leadership teams providing thought leadership within the department and division.

We are looking for a leader who is excited about bringing innovative solutions to bear on sponsors’ most challenging problems and skilled at work shaping and mentoring. The ideal candidate will have experience with a range of National Security and Public Sector problems, MITRE research and capability development efforts, and engagement in the broader professional and academic community. Any candidate needs to be an intentional mentor, and strategic thinker, enable business development, and have a passion for developing new capabilities that enable MITRE to solve complex sponsor problems.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Engages with sponsors and directly contributes to high-impact, high visibility work efforts for key sponsors and critical outcomes
  • Works in partnership with the Systems Security Engineering Department leadership team to grow the diversity and quality of the work program
  • Serves as a technical expert within the department, division and across MITRE’s differentiated technical capabilities
  • Fosters collaboration with academic, industry and government experts and communities. Supports publication and public release of technologies.
  • Supports problem formulation, selection, research methodology, execution and transition of department and division research and development efforts
  • Participates in division and corporate initiatives, strategy and leadership development, and contributes toward innovation in systems engineering

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience,
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Familiarity with systems security engineering, mission-focused security, and digital engineering methods, processes and tools.
  • Track record of innovation and impact on sponsor programs.
  • Experience in establishing strategic partnerships across company and sponsor organizations.
  • Experience driving teams and sponsor organizations through digital transformation initiatives, with a focus on integrating security concepts and principles in digital engineering practices.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with emerging assurance technologies.
  • Knowledge of effects-based security engineering techniques and analyses: e.g., loss-driven analysis and System Theoretic Process Analysis.
  • Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference given to qualified candidates with advanced degree (MS / PhD) in math, physics, electrical, mechanical, systems or aerospace engineering
  • Active Top Secret clearance
  • Ongoing relationships with thought leaders in industry and academia
  • Experience delivering high quality work products across MITRE’s key sponsors that drive systems engineering execution and innovation across the government
  • Experience with the application of NIST SP 800-160 Volume 1 Revision 1
  • Demonstrated external engagement through publications and presentations, including at recognized professional society conferences
  • Demonstrated record of effective and thoughtful mentorship
  • Experience in conducting research and development of new technical capabilities

Salary compensation range and midpoint:

$172,500 - $215,500 - $258,500 Annual
