Delta Air Lines connects the world by flying 180 million customers to 300+ destinations every year. In the Engineering Analytics team, we build and deploy data science and machine learning models to support this complex operation. The team is seeking a data engineer to take on developing data pipelines, manage data ingestion and cleaning, and support data availability for application development.

An appropriate candidate will have technical knowledge of BI systems, big data architecture and technology landscape, API consumption, ETL/ELT orchestration, and business intelligence tools. The candidate should have excellent organizational and communication skills and feel comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Functions:

  • Implement data engineering solutions, e.g., locate and extract data from a variety of sources for use in reporting, analysis, and statistical modeling to drive continuous improvement)
  • Practice good software engineering techniques, e.g., Git, scrum, branching, code reviews, spikes
  • Execute the data engineering roadmap
  • Partner with Information Technology to optimize and enhance the database environment for optimal efficiency and best practices
  • Leverage emerging technologies and identify efficient and meaningful ways to disseminate data and analysis to satisfy the business’ needs
  • Interface with business unit leaders to develop and maintain internal customer relationships
  • Practice safety-conscious environment resulting in employee safety and well-being

What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years’ experience working as a data engineer
  • Proficiency in SQL (CTE, window functions, temporal data)
  • Proficiency in Python and data-focused packages, e.g., Pandas, Numpy, Databricks/Spark, etc.
  • Proficiency with APIs
  • Proficiency with software development tools such as Git, IDEs, CI/CD
  • Experience with data warehousing/data modeling concepts
  • Experience building efficient, ETL/ELT processes using industry leading tools such as SSIS,
  • Informatica, Talend, etc.
  • Experience with data pipeline orchestration tools, e.g. DBT, Airflow, etc.
  • Working knowledge of cloud computing, e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP
  • Embraces diverse people, thinking and styles

  • Proven experience leading a project, from requirements gathering to deployment.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)

  • Working knowledge of data science/machine learning best practices and tools
  • Familiarity with nosql databases and distributed databases, e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, etc.
  • Experience with Palantir
  • Strong written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong project management, organizational, and prioritizations skills
  • Must be performing satisfactorily in present position
