If so, the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department is seeking a highly resourceful, adaptable, multi-tasker with solid critical thinking and communications skills for our Equipment Operator III (EOIII) position.

The Equipment Operator III (EOIII) position is assigned to the Yard Waste Center within the Solid Waste Services department. This part time temporary position is devoted to providing maintenance and equipment operation for the Center’s compost and mulch production and Wilders Grove Landfill. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge in composting operations and possess an understanding of the importance of reducing and recycling organic waste. Previous equipment operating experience in field-based equipment operation, reporting, and customer service is essential for this position. The EOIII is under the general supervision of the Operations Crew Supervisor. This position will be required to work rotating Saturdays. In addition, this position may be required to work evenings and/or weekends.

Solid Waste Services is responsible for the collection and processing of residential garbage, recycling, and yard waste materials along with several specialized collection services. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Safely operates heavy equipment, including (but not limited to) 45-ton articulated off-road dump trucks, rubber-tired loaders, track loaders, water trucks, grinders (tub & horizontal), compost screeners, windrow turners, and other machinery. Tasks include dumping, turning, watering, monitoring, and efficiently maintaining a large windrow composting system. Uses in-vehicle technology to safely complete daily work assignments.
  • Maintenance & Repair: Provides specialized, skilled general maintenance in support of the Yard Waste Center and Wilders Grove Landfill. Responsibilities include repairing and maintaining buildings and grounds, as well as performing preventative maintenance and construction activities at both locations.
  • Safety & Quality Assurance: Performs daily inspections of all operated equipment. Prepares and submits inspection records and reports. Maintains the cleanliness of work areas, tools, and equipment while adhering to safety policies and procedures.
  • Customer Service: Addresses issues and concerns of both internal and external customers, ensuring their needs are met efficiently and professionally.
  • Training: Assists the Crew Supervisor and Crew Leader in developing and training new employees for potential promotional opportunities. Focuses on employees who demonstrate or express interest in assuming higher-level operating roles within the department.
  • Back-up Support: In the absence of the Scale Operator, provides back-up support for Scale House operations, ensuring continuity of service.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
