AWS Data Center (DC) Operations in Japan seeks a global operational principal engineer to influence, guide, and deliver methods that directly improve our current and future datacenter systems within our infrastructure. As a DC principal engineer, you provide strategic technical leadership across Japan DC region chief engineers, and collaborate with global principal engineers to establish technical standards, drive technical maintenance programs, engineering practices, and engineering methodologies. You work on solving our hardest problems, build high quality solutions, and created process improvements that are aligned with our business needs.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. Key job responsibilities

You establish development standards, best practices and drive operational excellence. You are the connection between data center engineering operations and design engineering, construction, commissioning, controls engineering, field service engineering, and senior leadership. You influence DC chief engineers by establishing engineering priorities and deliverables. You set engineering priorities and vision, and deliver expertise in either/or any of the following; mechanical, electrical, controls. You drive improvements in maintenance programs. You lead external customer facing relationships in root cause analysis and conduct executive engagements. You collaborate with mechanical design and controls teams to incorporate operational experiences into mechanical control systems. You drive improvements in sustainability through programs such as power utilization effectiveness, water utilization efficiency, global engineering bulletins, and preventive maintenance. You are a call leader for critical site events and large scale events, and assist in driving the correction of errors process and root cause analysis.

A day in the life

You team with a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, operations managers, and other roles. You collaborate with people across Amazon Data Services to find solutions to engineering problems. You will inspect engineering performance trends and KPIs and advise senior managers and chief engineers. You will own and drive goals and projects to deliver engineering outcomes that benefit our customers. You will use machine learning and generative AI technologies to improve engineering performance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years technical experience in mission critical facilities
  • Experience in design or operations of high voltage distribution systems and one or more of chill water, air cooled, free cooled, or evaporative cooling systems
  • Experience and familiarity in one or more of data center design, construction, operation, or maintenance
  • Ability to research data center designs, technologies, construction methods, and operations procedures for data center systems
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One or more of;

  • Bachelor or master's degree in aerospace, nuclear, mechanical, electrical, or controls engineering
  • Direct experience in mechanical system controls
  • Experience in developing and writing engineering operations procedures
  • Experience in developing engineering quality standards
  • JLPT N3
