We are looking for a (Senior) Machine Learning Engineer to join the UPM AI Center of Excellence. The position is located in Helsinki, Finland.

What you will do

This unit supports UPM's AI transformation projects and acts as a catalyst for AI adoption across the organization. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team of experts and do pioneering AI work in the heart of the renewable and sustainable materials industry.

• System Design & Development: Design and develop end-to-end AI/ML pipelines, including real-time data ingestion and intelligence, model training, deployment, and monitoring. Ensure alignment with the underlying AI platform architecture, UPM’s IT infrastructure, and business goals
• Standardization & Documentation: Establish best practices and enforce documentation and standards for efficient AI/ML solutions development and deployment. Define processes and decision frameworks for evaluating and validating AI solutions and automating such workflows
• Collaboration & Support: Work closely with AI project teams, providing technical expertise and guidance on building and deploying AI solutions. Ensure efficient adoption of existing AI/ML capabilities and prepare new capabilities for production use
• Technical Leadership and Direction: Evaluate and select technologies and tools for AI solutions and systems, ensuring robustness, scalability, and maintainability. Facilitate technology decision-making processes and shape a coherent AI technology landscape with AI tech leads, IT platform owners, and architects
• Continuous Learning and Innovation: Stay updated on emerging trends and apply AI expertise to unlock new opportunities across UPM. Mentor and train junior engineers in AI technologies and best practices
• Compliance and Governance: Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and internal guidelines for responsible AI use

Who you are

We are looking for a highly motivated Machine Learning Engineer, a hands-on professional with a passion for building impactful AI/ML solutions in an industrial setting. You should have:

• A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
• 5+ years of industry experience in developing and deploying AI/ML solutions, including some experience with Generative AI (e.g., RAG)
• Strong proficiency in Python and deep expertise in ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn)
• Strong hands-on experience with MLOps platforms and tools (e.g., MLflow, Kubeflow, Airflow)
• Solid understanding and practical experience in leveraging containerized environments (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
• Familiarity with real-time data processing frameworks and tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Apache Spark)
• Experience with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitLab)
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, and their AI/ML services (e.g., Azure ML, SageMaker, Vertex AI)
• Excellent problem-solving skills, a can-do attitude, and a proactive approach to continuous learning
• Fluency in English with strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable working in multicultural and virtual teams
