This recruitment will be used to fill twelve part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Services Assistant for the Memorial Union at Oregon State University (OSU).

This is an entry-level role offering opportunities for growth and professional development. Team members are responsible for setting up and breaking down reservable spaces, along with supporting various operational needs to ensure the success of events. The role involves close collaboration with student Setup Coordinators and works as part of a team-oriented environment.

This position serves as a member of the Guest Services Event Staff at the Memorial Union. As a high-visibility role, Guest Services Event Support staff directly influence the customer experience through their behavior and communication. Professionalism is essential and includes demonstrating a courteous, respectful, and businesslike demeanor at all times.

New hires will begin by participating in event setup shifts to become familiar with the building, their colleagues, and proper use of MU equipment. Advancement opportunities are available based on interest, performance, and staffing needs. These include training for leadership roles in event management, operations, and event coordination.

Position Duties

  • Effectively communicate with clients and guests to assist with a variety of inquiries, providing clear and helpful responses.
  • Actively engage with colleagues, analyze equipment needs, and collaborate with team members to organize and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Navigate the building and storage rooms to analyze supply usage and equipment needs to ensure spaces are ready for guests. Collaborate with staff to safely move equipment
  • Work in team environment to setup and assist with operation of audio/visual equipment. This can include audio and lighting for shows.
  • Contribute to a clean and welcoming MU environment by maintaining the appearance of common areas including offices, lounges, meeting rooms, storage areas and hallways
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication through radio, email, Microsoft Teams, in person, and other channels.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively, respectfully, and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrates consistent reliability by reporting to all assigned shifts, regardless of scheduled hours, including evenings, weekends, finals week, and holidays as needed
  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • Works collaboratively with team members to achieve shared goal
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs. consistently for up to one hour

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Experience with audio/visual (AV) equipment
  • Experience supporting events or working in the event industry
  • Providing a high level of customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience interacting with and/or providing customer service to people with different backgrounds, perspectives, identities and life experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive and welcoming workplace environment.
